In mid-June, NATO Secretary General Rutte delivered a speech in response
to US President Trump's accusations that European countries had failed
to support the United States in the war against Iran. --- Rutte,
however, claimed that 5,000 flights to the war front departed from US
and NATO military bases in Europe, 500 of which were from Italian bases.
By Italian bases, we mean the Sicilian bases, particularly the one in
Sigonella.
Rutte's statements have thrown the Italian government into disarray,
struggling to restore balance with the White House following Trump's
attacks on Meloni.
The government , plagued by unmanageable embarrassment, initially denied
the NATO Secretary General's "inappropriate" statements, but then,
pressured by the opposition, relented, clarifying that Rutte had been
confused and that the 500 flights referred to logistical operations
envisaged in the secret 1954 agreements, in line with the constitution.
So Italy did not participate in the war against Iran. And here opens
another discussion, one that addresses the meaning of the term
"logistics" and its real implications.
For supporters of logistics as something distinct from war operations,
this is nothing more than the act of pressing the button that releases
bombs or launches missiles. Beyond this, there is only logistics:
sending a drone into the air to provide the enemy's positions and
targets, performing in-flight or ground refueling, servicing equipment,
but also providing meals, keeping the work environment clean, and
countless other activities necessary for the efficiency of the
fighter-bomber or other war machines.
This and more is done in Sigonella, where behind the term "other" lie
important activities such as resupplying aircraft, aircraft carriers,
drones, and various troops.
SigonellaIt has long been the beating heart of the United States
military presence in the Mediterranean and surrounding mainland Europe,
Asia, and Africa. No conflict can unfold without the direction of the
powerful Sicilian base, without its direct and indirect support, and
pretending not to know its true and tragic role means joining the front
of disinformation and a war waged with the most sophisticated propaganda
tools. For the government and the snake oil salesmen who have always
served the American master, all this is not participation in the war;
it's an unfunny joke, but it demonstrates the responsibility of all
governments, regardless of their colors, for the choices and interests
of American governments. There is nothing more to say, but
unfortunately, the Sigonella case resurfaces time and again with the
same tragic positions.
We have written countless times in this newspaper that Sicily is fully
implicated in this and other wars, starting with the genocide in Gaza.
We must not forget the crucial role of the MUOS in Niscemi, which
provided every type of support during the attack on Iran, allowing the
brutal assault to proceed smoothly. The MUOS is a structure under the
control of Sigonella that manages US military operations around the
world 24/7. In Niscemi, blood doesn't flow between antennas and
satellite dishes; it flows in countless places where US interests are
fueled by military force.
Now, the attack on Iran has resumed with greater momentum than before,
but the opposition has forgotten the accusations of government
complicity and the logistical operations of US bases in Italy, in a war
that involves the country. Meanwhile, the government has blood on its
hands, and the consciences of its members are dirtier than a dirty pig
dump. Now that the propaganda phase is over, planned destruction returns
to the daily rhythm to which we should resign ourselves. The secret
agreements imposed by the US and NATO membership are also the legacy of
the center-left, which made good use of them during its time in government.
The fight against war concerns only those who sincerely hate militarism
in all its facets. Meloni, Crosetto, Tajani, Salvini, Vannacci, Schlein,
Conte, and their cronies are enrolled on the war front even when
historical circumstances force them to act as pacifists.
