(en) Italy, Livorno: On trial for the banner "Truth and justice for Fares" - Solidarity with the defendants (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Almost three years after the death of Fares Shgater during a police
check in Livorno, the only trial - now almost concluded - is that
against those who demonstrated for truth and justice. ---- The Livorno
Anarchist Federation and the Libertarian Anarchist Collective demand the
acquittal of the accused and return to demanding truth and justice for
Fares Shgater. ---- The last hearing of the trial following the
demonstration on 26 April 2021 which called for truth and justice for
Fares Sghater, who died in Livorno at the age of 25 during a police
check, drowned in the night between 24 and 25 April 2021 in the Fosso
Reale in front of the Fortezza Nuova. The trial sees two participants in
the demonstration accused, including one of our comrades.
He cannot die during a police check. In these three years the
institutions and the official media have no longer given any response to
the request for truth and justice forcefully advanced by the
demonstrations that were held in the city immediately after the death of
this young man. Regardless of the specific facts, it is clear that the
racist policies established in Italy by successive governments over the
last thirty years have created a situation in which a foreign citizen
risks, during a police check, that his life suddenly plummets as a
result of a repatriation order, an arrest, detention in a CPR, but also
blackmail, harassment and violence on the part of the agents.
The story of Fares' death was soon forgotten and removed. The only thing
that seems to have progressed in recent years is the trial of those who
demonstrated to shed light on a death that had shaken the city. A
demonstration that managed to express on a political level the anger
that Fares' family, friends and compatriots felt. The city right,
confirming its provocative character, its racism and class contempt,
organized, with the sole aim of stoking tensions, a
counter-demonstration a few meters from where the demonstration for
Fares was held. The latter was then held without any particular
incidents, so much so that a delegation of demonstrators was even
received by the police commissioner.
The response of the institutions, however, was to put the demonstrators
on trial. A few days after the demonstration, a young compatriot of
Fares was stopped, locked in a CPR and repatriated to his native
country, Tunisia. For all we know he may not even be aware that he is
being charged in a trial in Livorno. The other defendant is one of our
comrades, accused of having collaborated in writing a banner that read
"Truth and justice for Fares, No racism, No police violence" and, in one
corner, "acab".
A trial for contempt of a public official on the charge of having
collaborated in writing a banner would almost seem ridiculous if this
trial did not call into question freedom of expression. An unacceptable
censorship which, in the event of a conviction, would become a real case
of repression.
