(en) Italy, UCADI #211 - The European Union is heading for ruin (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The effects of the Ukrainian war are increasingly impacting the
institutional structure of the European Union, its policies, the
community aequis, and its values, corroding the Union from within with
the same virulence as a pandemic virus preparing its annihilation .
Until now, we have supported the project of building the European Union,
even though we were aware that it was an economic and political
structure managed by the ordoliberalism prevailing in Europe. But we
were willing to pay the price of joining the project of Franco-Rhine
industrial and financial capital, in the illusion of seeing the war
between the continent's peoples, which tore the flesh of Europe's
inhabitants during two devastating world wars, disappear from European
soil. We saw this objective as a precondition for reviving the defense
of the interests of the subaltern classes, whose capacity for
emancipation has been crushed, pushing them to slaughter each other in
the name of nationalism. The new balances that arose from the Second
World War had paved the way for the crisis of colonialism, putting the
European states in crisis, increasingly deprived of resources.
We deluded ourselves: we should have understood this ever since
reunified Germany, with the support of the Polish Pope, unleashed the
war that led to the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia. As is usual in
European history, the Balkans served as a testing ground for Europe's
future destiny, anticipating what would later happen on a larger scale
and with far more devastating force. The project seemed coherent and
possible because it was based on mutual economic interest and seemed to
correspond to a phase of coherent development of production processes
and capitalist accumulation: for the first time, a state structure was
being created not on ethnic, linguistic, or historical grounds, but by
trusting in the objectivity of the common economic interest and the
possibility of rebuilding the production chains of certain economic
sectors essential to the life of the continent, and by focusing on the
common agricultural market, identified as the production sector in which
coordination was easiest and most strategic. The plan sought to create a
political unity centered on cultural, religious, and ethnic pluralism,
merging diverse historical experiences. We were convinced that, within a
capitalist logic, it was self-interest that held the new political
formation together, rather than abstract ideals. However, the unity of
the unity, essential to the project's success, was already undermined in
2004 by an excessive enlargement of the Union. This was sponsored, not
coincidentally, by Great Britain, which had joined the EU after an
initial period of deep aversion. It was convinced that it was easier to
undermine it from within. By basking in the foolish conviction of a
European political class that seemed in a hurry to
absorb the countries previously dominated by Moscow, it was anticipating
a possible recovery from Russia's economic and political turmoil and
re-projecting its hegemony toward this part of Europe.
Thus, the greedy EU swallowed up the Baltic countries, and German
policy, which aspired to lead the Union, made them its proxies, using
them as blockheads to implement its strategies, not realizing that the
latter would take over the reins of the European Union. Proof of this is
the fact that politicians from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia now
control defense, economic, and foreign policy, respectively. As a
result, common defense is practically non-existent, the economy is
increasingly a disaster, and foreign policy, entrusted to Kaya Kretina
Kallas, is totally non-existent.
If we then add to this band of incompetents the contribution of Ursula
von der Stupid, a character of certain inadequacy and questionable
honesty (as proven by the numerous investigations into her actions,
never concluded) in the performance of her duties, and a cheerful goose
like Roberta Metsola, who presides over the Union Parliament, the
picture is tragically complete and the dimensions of the disaster become
manifestly epochal.
Given the institutional structure of the Union, the Council of Heads of
State and Government could have rebalanced the situation, but its
members include Emmanuel Macron, a failed politician who is on his way
to the elephant graveyard, leaving no regrets; a politician like Mertz,
formerly a servant of Blackrock and of interests completely foreign to
those of the country he leads, head of one of the most unpopular
governments in German history; Meanwhile, Britain-which effectively
directs and directs European politics while remaining outside it-is
being steadily replaced by inconsistent, ineffective, and crumbling
figures; with a Polish prime minister like Donald Tush, flanked by a
shady figure like Foreign Minister Sikorski, leading a country vying for
military hegemony in Europe and distinguished by a rearmament aimed at
keeping allies and enemies at bay. What can we say about the Meloni
government, which stands out for its total inertia, its regressive
management of the economy, the labor market, and the immigration
problem, allowing what remains of the welfare system, starting with
healthcare and education, to fall into disrepair, lacking investment
plans for the economy and lacking ideas and prospects to sustain the
country's productive system, and leaving young people to abandon the
country in desperation?
The only exception among European governments is the Spanish one, which
is struggling to pursue a reasonable and prudent policy, which has led
the country to grow faster than any other in Europe, which holds a
respectable position in foreign policy and is attempting to experiment
with innovative solutions to raise Spanish production levels, stabilize
its domestic labor market, and intervene in the regulation of emigration.
The results of the Ukrainian war
Observing what is happening on the battlefield, even the most obtuse
observers understand that Ukraine's defeat is a fact, and it's only a
matter of time before it becomes formalized.
Only false information from the front and from within the country can
further delude politicians, who feed and convince themselves by
mistaking their own propaganda for reality and supporting the narrative
of a war whose outcome is still undecided, and even more so the thesis
that Ukraine is winning on the battlefield. The front advances
inexorably from east to west, and now Russia's demands are no longer
limited to Crimea and its four original oblasts, but also include the
oblasts of Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and, why not, Odessa. The
burden of peace will be heavier the longer the war continues, because
the price paid in blood by Russia will require greater protection of its
security. From this perspective, re-establishing a connection with
Transnistria through the Odessa region and cutting off Ukraine's access
to the sea constitutes Russia's surest guarantee of transforming the
landlocked Ukrainian state into an enclave, crippling its economy by
territorially disposing of its most productive and raw material-rich
territories. Furthermore, it is not unlikely that a Ukrainian defeat on
the ground will rekindle the never-simmering appetites of Romania,
Poland, and Hungary, eager to regain control over those parts of
Ukrainian territory currently held by Kiev and home to populations from
these respective states. This will further reduce Ukraine's population,
whose numbers are already being destroyed. This is demonstrated by the
projected reduction of its population by 8 million by 2050, due to the
growth of the diaspora, the decline in birth rates, and the loss of
territory and economic strength of the country. Ukraine's demographic
situation was already dire before the war, characterized by an economic
diaspora that depended on the social structure of families, with a
further spread of alcoholism and a widespread tendency among women,
especially in western Ukraine, to emigrate abroad to work as caregivers
and supplement meager family budgets. It should not be forgotten that in
pre-war Ukraine, the loss of the Russian market for Ukrainian goods due
to its rapprochement with the West had led to a crisis in its industry
and mining sector.
The war effort in which the European Union has engaged is tearing it
apart from within, distancing its peoples from consensus on the
construction of a common political and institutional structure. This is
especially true as the vaunted foundations of the Community aequis are
being easily violated, allowing a metamorphosis of the legal systems of
many already member countries, such as the Baltics, by accepting as
legitimate Ukrainian institutional choices regarding xenophobia,
religious freedom, the repression of linguistic minorities, and the
failure to recognize cultural and identity roots. This is even more so
by introducing into the Community legal system liberticidal practices
that affect individuals and the freedom of thought and criticism.
The outcome of the elections taking place in many European Union
countries, first and foremost Italy and France, next year, will
certainly contribute to the development of this process. However, the
disastrous outcome of the war and the weight of the defeat will be
decisive, leaving the European Union's current ruling class with a wave
of shame and the awareness of its inconsistency and incompetence. Once
they are faced with reality, people do not forgive.
