As we go to press, the 428 passengers of the Freedom Flotilla illegally
arrested by Israel have been released. Let's not be fooled by this
release: the far-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu is not acting
magnanimously, but rather trying to avoid yet another media scandal
about the conditions of detention in the Jewish state. The Israeli
leader, already subject to an arrest warrant from the International
Criminal Court for two years for crimes against humanity, denies the
accusations of torture against Palestinian prisoners made by NGOs and
the media. However, testimonies regularly recount rape and inhumane
practices, testimonies corroborated once again in recent days by a video
showing the humiliation inflicted on the activists of the flotilla.
Following yet another abduction of these individuals in international
waters, the Israeli Minister of National Security filmed himself
welcoming the activists, who were being held kneeling with their hands
tied behind their backs and their heads on the ground. While this has,
for once, prompted a reaction from Western leaders regarding Israel's
practices, it is easy to imagine what is being inflicted, off-camera, on
the Palestinian people in the midst of genocide.
Faced with this outrage, our response can only be one of solidarity with
the Palestinian people and an ever-stronger affirmation of our struggles
against borders, the far right, and its imperialism.
