(en) Italy, Umanita Nova #24-25 - Tear Down the Patriarchy, Shatter Genders, Liberate Bodies. Anarchy and Transfeminism (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Wed, 22 Oct 2025 08:41:46 +0300

Anarchy and Transfeminism ---- TEAR DOWN THE PATRIARCHY, SHATTER GENDERS, LIBERATE BODIES ---- The transfeminist movement, which in recent years has forcefully emerged within society, has brought a very significant shift to historical feminism, which was mainly anchored in the goal of equality between men and women. It challenges the binary order and thus carries out a radical critique of patriarchy. ---- The rooting and expansion of transfeminist and queer movements are increasingly indispensable in the face of the intensification of patriarchal oppression in the present phase, in which, in various parts of the world, the link with religious oppression is becoming stronger. In Italy, the Meloni government has introduced specific patriarchal and familist legislative measures to promote birth rates within the traditional family. However, familism and the defense of the traditional, sexist, and hierarchical family are not the exclusive heritage of the reactionary right; there is also a familism rooted in the tradition of the left.

Patriarchy is one of the fundamental knots of social oppression.
The exploitation of dominant sexed bodies over dominated sexed bodies predates capitalist exploitation and cannot be automatically overcome by the overthrow of capitalism alone, but only through a transformation of social relations that goes hand in hand with simultaneous economic and social transformation. The gender question is not something to be resolved "afterwards": we reject the politics of two stages.

We reject any form of binarism which, with the rigid division of roles based on the two sexes -male and female-, provides, under the pretext of a supposed naturalness, the justification for the hierarchy on which patriarchy rests.

We believe that transfeminism constitutes a space for radical critique of patriarchy in which anarchism can express its own content, connect effectively with ongoing struggles, and promote demands that correspond to prospects of real social change through libertarian methods.

However, we identify some critical issues -not exclusive to the transfeminist movement- which sometimes appear as an identity-based positioning (not generalized but still widespread) that tends to recognize legitimacy of intervention only for those who directly experience specific oppressions, relegating other subjects, deemed "privileged," exclusively to an uncritical support role. We believe that this delegitimizing approach must be dismantled in order to affirm, against any identitarianism, an inclusive and plural universal and to continue to uphold the practice of solidarity by weaving meaningful alliances.

It is important to continue working on a theoretical and practical elaboration that allows for an anarchist, original, and revolutionary approach to gender reflection, promoting concrete initiatives that add further radicality to transfeminist struggles and demands.

We therefore identify the need to adopt the transfeminist critical perspective in the various campaigns and interventions that the FAI considers activating within the context of social struggles, as well as to promote transfeminist intervention against specific sexist policies implemented by the government, which increasingly consolidate the sexual division of labor, discrimination, and the denial of freedom of choice over one's own body. In this sense, for example, fall the pro-natalist policies, attacks on abortion, contraception, and sex education, cuts to social services, and the security-based response to sexual violence -nourished by a rape culture grounded in the domination of bodies. Moreover, the growing militarization of society reinforces a machista model based on hierarchy, oppression, brutality, and the cult of strength.

We intend to proceed collectively as a Federation also along this path.
The intersectionality often emphasized in today's transfeminist debate is part of the anarchist perspective when we are able to grasp the connections among the various issues that generate oppression and exploitation without establishing a hierarchy of problems and solutions.

Our perspective is that of social revolution: the radical transformation of the existing world through the simultaneous transformation of all relationships.
