Saturday December 6, Fourth Annual Your Food Today & Tomorrow! Conference (Brooklyn)
Food, farm and anti-hunger advocates, community gardeners, dieticians
and nutritionists, chefs and educators will come together at New York
City Technical College to explore strategies for supporting stronger,
healthier regional farms while providing better food and opportunities to low-income urban and rural residents. The event will kick off with
a dramatic, interactive "Food System Firing Line" with a dozen food-system experts addressing the issues and challenges facing us. Over 60 organizations -- ranging from City Harvest, Hunger Action Network of NYS and Greenmarkets to American Farmland Trust and Cornell's Farming Alternatives Program - will participate in the day's many workshops, displays, plenary and breakout sessions.
Focusing on strategies for strengthening farms, reducing hunger and creating community, the conference sessions will cover such issues as
the myths and realities of hunger in NYC; the alarming decline in - and tremendous potential for - farming in our state; New York State and City food; nutrition and farm policy; how groups and individuals can buy direct from farmers; healthy diets; and food-system education. All participants will learn about the food system, their role in it and concrete ways to get better food while creating a stronger local economy, cleaner environment and healthier neighborhoods.
A central part of the day-long event will be a delicious, gourmet lunch prepared by Julia Jordan and her hospitality management students at City Tech - using seasonal ingredients brought in that morning by regional farmers. Peter Hoffman, Executive Chef of the Savoy Restaurant in Soho, will speak after lunch about his personal journey
as a celebrated chef working directly with regional farmers and the vast potential for New York City to help create a sustainable regional food system.
And the day will wrap up with a New York State wine, juice and cheese
reception/press conference sponsored by New York Farms!, a state-wide
collaborative campaign of over 50 organizations working to promote New York State agriculture and foster consumer loyalty to New York farm products.

Sunday December 7, Picket and Civil Disobedience at Brookhaven National Lab
For 50 years, Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) has contaminated Long Island. Every year they apologize for their past mistakes and promise
to improve, and yet every year they continue to spread poisons into our ground and water. We are demanding that they permanently close the research reactors and clean up the messes they have created. We will gather at the William Floyd Parkway Entrance to BNL (L.I.E. exit 68 and north) at 11 A.M.
These monthly demonstrations are organized by Roger Snyder of L.I. SHAD (lishad@pobox.com, (516-265-9430). This demonstration will include an interfaith service and civil disobedience. If you wish to take part in the civil disobdeience, you must take a nonviolence training course; please contact Roger. Of course, you are also welcome to join a lawful picket in support of those who plan to be arrested.
Other organizations participate, including the Peconic Green Party and the Nassau County Green Party.
Here are some photos from an earlier demonstration in March and a demonstration in April.
Monday December 8, A Concert for Mumia Abu-Jamal, Political Prisoner on Death Row (Manhattan)
This concert is in honor of Mumia Abu-Jamal, a journalist and former Black Panther who may have been framed for the 1981 murder of a Philadelphia policeman. He remains on death row in Pennsylvania, awaiting a decision from the PA Supreme Court on his demand for a new
trial. Mumia's case concentrates all the current trends toward the criminalization of Black men, the suppression of dissent, the expanded death penalty, and the gutting of defendants' rights.
You'll be able to hear the following bands and performers: * DJ Spooky * The Arsonists * Non-Phixion * Killer Priest * Mark Ribot * Roy Nathanson * Gloria * Sparrow * Universus from the Bronxside * Tracie Morris * Stephan Smith * White Collar Crime * ... and special guests
DJs from Cultural Alchemy will take over all night in the Downstairs Lounge.
At 7 P.M. in Wetlands 161 Hudson Street, 2 blocks south of Canal Street stop on A/C or 1/9 trains
Sunday December 14, Presentation of the 1997 Humanist of the Year Award to Mumia Abu-Jamal (Manhattan)
The Church of Humanism will present this award at 11 A.M. at the Universalist Society, 76th Street and Central Park West, in N.Y. City. The Church of Humanism bestows its Humanist of the Year Award on exemplary individuals in the great struggle for social justice, human
liberation and the creation of a better world.
The key speaker at the ceremony will be Pam Africa, of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal and long-standing member of the Move organization.
Mumia Abu-Jamal is a political prisoner on death row in Pennsylvania.
There is strong reason to believe that Mumia, an award-winning journalist, radio talk-show host, former Black Panther, MOVE supporter and outspoken critic of the prison system, has been framed and sentenced to death because of his political beliefs. Mumia has been on death row for 15 years and is in great danger of being executed.
Mumia's trial for allegedly killing a Philadelphia police officer was
full of gross procedural errors and judicial misconduct. Human Rights
Watch gave Mumia an award as an author under political persecution, and Amnesty International has stated that the government "appears to have overtly used Mumia's political beliefs and affiliations... to impose the death penalty."
Writer Alice Walker, who visited Mumia twice in prison, stated that Mumia's is a "...rare and courageous voice speaking from a place we fear to know... He is innocent."
