Students Lay Siege to APEC Leaders' Summit as Suharto Goes on Trial

Today at 8 am, students at the University of British Columbia will begin 'laying siege' to the APEC Leaders' Summit by building a tent city near the Goddess of Democracy outside the Student Union Building. The tent city, named Democracy Village (a.k.a. DemoVille) will be moved into the security zone as the week progresses in an effort to make it impossible to hold the Leaders' Summit on campus.

Monday's construction of the tent city coincides with a visit to UBC by East Timorese and Indonesian exiles, who will be presenting testimony about the genocide in East Timor in a trial of General Suharto for crimes against humanity. At 12:30, they will speak at the tent city, and then visit the Museum of Anthropology, where Suharto will be an honored guest at the APEC Leaders' Summit.

The trial is cosponsored by the East Timor Alert Network and APEC Alert, which is a grassroots group opposing APEC and the APEC world vision. According to graduate student and APEC Alert member Brian Fuller, 27, "we feel it's important to reclaim our campus and refuse the presence of APEC. The APEC vision is about increasing the power of corporations at the expense of people. It has no place in a just society."

Though they've been the target of harassment from the UBC administration and arrested by the RCMP, APEC Alert is ready to defend their right to peacefully protest APEC. They're calling on other groups and individuals to join the tent city. Students from Simon Fraser University, Langara College, the University of Victoria, and Evergreen College in Washington will be joining them during the week. "The 18 leaders will arrive to find us camping on the doorstep of the meeting site," said Yang Chang, 24, a fourth year fine arts student.
