VERSION INGLES DE LA NOTICIA, POR LA BURGESIA :PRISONERS RETURNED TO CAS

Leftist prisoners from Santiago's maximum security prison (CAS) Thursday=20 were returned to the penitentiary, which had been the objective of a=20 hunger strike in its fifth day.=20

Last Saturday prison guards transferred 16 prisoners from the CAS to=20 Colina II, on the outskirts of northern Santiago, where access by=20 visiting family members is difficult. The prisoners, all members of=20 leftist groups such as Mapu-Lautaro and a faction of the Manuel=20 Rodriguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), undertook a hunger strike since=20 the day of their transfer. Another 68 such prisoners in three=20 different prison facilities in Santiago, including nine women,=20 Wednesday had begun a fast in solidarity with them.=20

Prison officials would not elaborate on the motives for the transfer,=20 which left three prisoners injured as a result, but denied it was=20 intended as punishment. Nevertheless, family members affirm the=20 16 prisoners, several of whom are awaiting replies to their requests for parole, had been placed in disciplinary cells and locked up all day. =20

Noted human rights advocate and attorney Jaime Castillo Velasco=20 visited the prisoners at the Colina II facility and had urged=20 them to abandon the hunger strike.
