Urgent need for international observers fluent in Spanish union election scheduled for Oct. 6 near Tijuana
An election is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6 at the Han Young feeder plant for Hyundai near Tijuana. If a free and fair election proceeds as scheduled, the workers are likely to vote overwhelmingly for an independent union. This would be the first such union in the entire Mexican maquiladora sector and, hence, a precedent of enormous importance. There is every reason to fear that the Mexican labor board and/or Han Young management have plans for dirty tricks if the election does occur as scheduled. The Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers (in San Diego) has put out an urgent call for international observers who could come to Tijuana for the election on the 6th. If you are able to act as an observer, please contact the Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers immediately: 619-542-0826.
