(en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova #29-25 - No peace with the state and capital! Strikes in Greece: 13-hour workday passed (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 23 Nov 2025 08:00:49 +0200

Deaf to the wave of strikes and protests, the Athens parliament approved the Georgiadis law on October 16th, which, among other things, extends the workday to 13 hours and raises the retirement age to 74. We publish a statement from the Anarchist Political Organization - Federation of Collectives (APO), part of the International of Anarchist Federations. The APO participated in the mobilizations in recent weeks in Greece against the new anti-working-class reform, also taking to the streets on October 14th during the general strike, during which this statement was released.

General strike against the new anti-worker law, wage slavery, employer terror, and state repression

We are in a period of widespread escalation in the political and economic elites' attack on the poor, through ever-deepening antisocial restructuring of every aspect of daily life, with the passage of a series of laws relating to healthcare, education, labor, housing, taxation, political and social expression, justice, and nature. The state and the employers aim for even greater exploitation of the poor, constantly worsening conditions of oppression. This drive toward the imposition of modern totalitarianism, led by the far-right, neoliberal New Democracy government, is reflected in a series of restructuring reforms that serve the declared and long-standing goals of the ruling class, regardless of political ownership. In reality, however, the reason why the right today so easily imposes the hegemony of neoliberalism and extends its policy of attack on workers, the

unemployed, and all those in distress is because the previous political administration, the Social Democratic government, in the name of the radical left, crushed movements, spread illusions and delusions across broad swathes of society, only to add another brick to the edifice of modern totalitarianism and further reinforce the belief that there is no alternative for the poor, no other world beyond that of the state and capitalism.

The implementation of the neoliberal model in the labor market, through continuous antisocial reforms,

has created conditions of extreme exploitation and terror in the world of wage labor. Flexible working hours, undeclared and unregistered work, the lack of workplace protections, the abolition of Sundays off and the 8-hour workday, deregulation of dismissals, daily intimidation and the threat of unemployment, the expansion of forms of employment with limited rights such as "freelance" work, the intensification of work, and retaliatory dismissals

in response to workers' demands are the weapons the state has placed in the hands of employers for further worker exploitation. In this direction of the neoliberal model, a decisive role was played by the anti-worker Hatzidakis bill, which was not inspired exclusively by the current far-right administration but was based on previous anti-worker legislation passed under SYRIZA and paved the way for increasing exploitation of the working class through monstrous new laws such as the Georgiadis bill.

Thanks to this law, several employers can now hire a worker for up to 13 hours a day and six days a week, conditions that had already been gradually normalized. Following this series of laws and bills, the current Minister of Labor, Niki Kerameos, is introducing another anti-work bill. This bill will now allow a single employer to hire a worker for up to 13 hours a day, intensifying the flexibilization of working hours throughout the year and eliminating overtime pay. The state and employers are seeking to overturn workers' rights (previous points of compromise in the class struggle between employers and workers) that were won through hard and bloody struggles in the past, such as the 8-hour workday and the right to strike. This is the direction taken by the new anti-worker bill about to be voted on, under which workers' free time will be demolished and they will be transformed into "resources" for the needs of capital, "available" at any time to satisfy the whims of their bosses.

All these "exceptions" are precisely those that have been officially enshrined in law over the past decades of continuous restructuring, sanctioning the bleeding and death of society, its sacrifice on the altar of employers' profits. In this context, we, the exploited and oppressed, continue to pay with our blood for the maintenance and reproduction of the barbaric system of exploitation and oppression that dominates, kills, and impoverishes. This is demonstrated by the dozens of murders of workers in factories practicing modern slavery, with 152 cases already recorded in the first nine months of 2025 alone, while more than 235 workers have been seriously injured. Because the perpetuation of the power and profits of economic and political rulers depends on the intensification of the exploitation of our class, the plundering of our lives, and the silencing and repression of all those who refuse to accept this barbarity as the only option.

From the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people and their displacement from their homeland, culminating in 77 years of atrocities committed in Palestine by Israel's butchers, to the three-year war in Ukraine, from the Russian invasion, which has left thousands of people impoverished and uprooted, to the daily murders of workers in sweatshops, to the detention in internment camps and the murders of migrants at the land and sea borders of Fortress Europe, to the deaths in understaffed hospitals and on dilapidated and neglected trains, to the fires that annually scorch forests and their ecosystems and destroy local communities, the state capitalist system has nothing but death, war, uprooting, and exploitation.

Defending the interests, needs, lives, and dignity of the working class requires collective, horizontally coordinated, and grassroots action. Organizing our resistance is of paramount importance, especially in a time of systematic and organized attacks by the state and the capitalist system. Collectivization, common action, and mutual understanding grounded in anarchist values are our tools against the modern totalitarianism of the state and capital, against their attempts to convince us that history has come to an end, that there is no perspective beyond the dystopian present and the system of power that creates it, and that if we choose the path of struggle and dignity, we will be crushed. On every open front of social and class struggle, where the aggression of the state and capital is manifest, we seek to radicalize the struggles by connecting them to the universal social vision of social and class emancipation, proposing the only realistic way out for the oppressed: organizing the struggle for social revolution, anarchy, and libertarian communism. To build an emancipated society based on dignity, justice, freedom, and solidarity a world without the exploitation and oppression of one human being by another!
