(en) Germany, Trier, Die Platform: Speech on Anti-War Day in Trier (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Wed, 5 Nov 2025 07:50:41 +0200

In the last century, two wars destroyed the entire world. The border of this great slaughter is only 100 km from this place (roughly pointing towards the pillory (if the speech is given at the Porta, towards the Marx statue)). Verdun is forever associated with the senselessness of war. Today we know how senseless the killing truly was, how people, nature, and resources were burned in the furnace of imperial ambitions. No one today would say that these wars were just or even justified.

In 1913, on the eve of World War I, Rosa Luxemburg organized a demonstration against the war and was imprisoned for 14 months. How many, who at the time knew nothing of the horrors of the coming war, considered this punishment appropriate? How many considered violence against the war's opponents necessary?

When Karl Liebknecht and Erich Mühsam stood up against the ongoing murder of the war, they were imprisoned in fortresses. How many people thought this was justified in order to win this unwinnable war? To prolong this horror?

Not even seven years after the end of World War II, young people organized the "Caravan Against Rearmament." There, Phillip Müller was shot by the police. He was the first demonstrator murdered by the state in the Federal Republic of Germany, and he was an anti-militarist like us.

It's not hard to see, looking back historically, how right these people were. Today, federal foundations are named after them, and plaques on buildings commemorate them. But their mission has been forgotten. Because today, the fight against war is as important again as it was in their time.

But when people rebel against war today, as they did just last weekend in Cologne, you might think it's 1913 all over again. At the conclusion of the Rheinmetall Disarmament Action Camp, where warmongers and arms manufacturers were blocked, an anti-military parade took place. The police attacked it, encircling over 600 people and injuring 150, some seriously. These people took to the streets for the same reasons as we did. They are our comrades. Their struggle is our struggle. Our struggle is the same struggle as in 1913.

We don't want to be beaten up by this state anymore. We don't want to be used up by this state, whether in war or in production. We don't want war propaganda that tries to tell us we're on the wrong side. We know we're on the right side, on the side of peace, on the side of international solidarity. We must stand together against the state violence that is coming, against the violence that already exists today. This is just the beginning. Organize yourselves, stand together, because together we cannot be defeated.

We despise and fight war because we not only demand a world of solidarity, but want to build it. Our resistance to rearmament and conscription is only possible together with the resistance to Fortress Europe, Frontex, and racist deportation policies. Therefore, we say to the BSW: piss off, you have no business at this demonstration!
