Alternative libertaire, Politis and L'Humanité are sponsoring, together 
with various partners, a conference organized by the association La 
Courtine, which keeps alive the memory of the massacre carried out by 
the French army on 19 September 1917 against Russian mutineers 
imprisoned in this camp in the south of the Creuse[2].
An impressive panel will bring together several historians working on 
the First World War (Jean-Yves Le Naour), the Russian Revolution (Rémi 
Adam and Éric Aunoble), the Soviet Union and communism (Jean-Jacques 
Marie), Portuguese deserters who took refuge in France (Victor Pereira), 
and the Thiaroye massacre, when the French army killed its own 
"Senegalese riflemen" near Dakar in 1944[1](Armelle Mabon).

For the occasion, three witnesses will be present: Thomas Liechti, 
grandson of the first deserter in Algeria, as well as the mayors of two 
villages in the Creuse: Benjamin Simons of Gentioux, with its famous 
monument "Maudite soit la guerre" ("Cursed be the war") where a national 
pacifist demonstration is held each year, and Thierry Letellier of La 
Villedieu, where in 1956 the local population blocked a convoy of 
soldiers being "recalled" to Algeria. Testimonies are also expected from 
deserters and conscientious objectors from Russia, Ukraine and Israel. 
Book tables will be available to delve deeper into these topics.

The conference will take place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October in 
Vitry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne). On Saturday evening, a cinema-theatre 
night will crown the event with a play about the French mutineers of 
1917 and a film about the La Courtine massacre. Alternative libertaire 
publishing will be present, especially with its books on the Russian 
Revolution and Kronstadt.
