(en) Italy, FAI: Eastern Europe: Stop the rearmament, stop the war (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 16 Oct 2025 08:42:16 +0300

Growing tensions in Eastern Europe, amid the war in Ukraine that has been ongoing for over three and a half years, pose a real risk of the conflict spreading to neighboring countries, or at least of further militarization of the borders, resulting in greater international involvement. The invocation of Article 4 of the NATO treaty by Poland and Estonia, following the incursion of Russian Federation aircraft into their airspace, has already led to greater EU involvement in the war in Eastern Europe, with the activation of NATO's Operation "Eastern Sentry," which follows just a few months after NATO launched Operation "Baltic Sentry" earlier this year.
Italy has already deployed its troops from the Baltic to the Black Sea for years, totaling 3,503 soldiers, 1,155 land vehicles, 3 naval units, and 23 aircraft. Any commitment by the Italian government to this new operation would therefore constitute a further military intervention in a context in which the Italian armed forces are already fully engaged. The fight against military missions abroad therefore takes on central importance in opposing Italian intervention in this war. This fight is even more important considering that, starting this year, the government has effectively had carte blanche to deploy a "Highly and Very Highly Operative Readiness Force" on missions.
It is more urgent than ever to intensify antimilitarist initiatives, both in the fight against the warmongering policies supported by the government and the main opposition parties, and in campaigns against rearmament.
