On Monday morning, the São Paulo government took another authoritarian
step in the Moinho favela, the last favela in the city center. Police
commanded by Governor Tarcísio Freitas and his watchdog, Public Security
Secretary Guilherme Derrite, with the support of the Public Prosecutor's
Office and the judiciary, arrested community leaders in a high-profile
operation amid allegations of numerous abuses.
Tarcísio's policies become clear when considered in context: he is
accelerating his offensive in downtown São Paulo after being defeated by
the Moinho struggles in May, and is seeking to consolidate his
authoritarian image among the far-right, just as Bolsonaro faces trial
in the Supreme Court for attempted coup, a year before the elections.
In total, 11 people were arrested based on fabricated charges and
fabricated evidence. The police and the Public Prosecutor's Office are
trying to criminalize popular leaders, workers, and those who had the
courage to confront the eviction policy that threatens nearly a thousand
families.
The headlines in major newspapers were tailor-made to trumpet Tarcísio's
victory against drug trafficking, amidst the dispute with the federal
government. Ultimately, this is what it amounts to: a political dispute
between the powerful at the service of real estate capital, willing to
trample the lives of those who dare to oppose it. Meanwhile, the real
management of drug trafficking is carried out in offices on Faria Lima
Avenue, political offices, and apartments in wealthier neighborhoods.
We cannot remain silent in the face of the criminalization of poverty
and the popular struggle! We call on everyone to join the demonstration
taking place this Wednesday, the 10th, at 5 p.m., at the entrance to the
Moinho Favela, for the release of political prisoners!
