August 26, 1945-2025 C. Cafiero Anarchist Group FAI Rome ---- On August
26, 1945, a celebration at the Garbatella Cinema Theater (now the
Palladium) inaugurated the founding of the C. Cafiero Anarchist Group,
headquartered at Via Vettor Fausto 3, Lotto 13, Garbatella. Around a
thousand supporters attended. Among the speakers were Zanchi, Modugno,
Fontana, and De Dominicis, who was repeatedly interrupted by applause as
he spoke about Carlo Cafiero, extolling his work in collaboration with
Errico Malatesta and other revolutionaries of the time, and the highly
humanitarian goals that had led him to fight.
On June 17, 1945, in issue 24 of the periodical Umanità Nova, Vito
Leonetti had already announced its foundation, and from July onward, the
C. Cafiero Anarchist Group met at Piazza Fiammetta 11 with the other
groups of the then Libertarian Communist Federation of Lazio: Il
Pensiero, Pietro Gori, Gino Lucetti, Carlo Cafiero, Ponte Regola,
Trastevere, and Pietro Gori di Civitavecchia. At the headquarters in
Piazza Fiammetta, where the libertarian periodical Umanità Nova was also
published, a general assembly was convened for August 6. It was decided
to commemorate Spartaco Stagnetti on August 19 at the Massimo cinema in
the San Giovanni district and to inaugurate the C. Cafiero Anarchist
Group in Garbatella on August 26.
The C. Cafiero Anarchist Group plaque was placed there, an Art
Nouveau-style plaque restored in 1971 with the acronym O.A.R. (Roman
Anarchist Organization), which comprised 14 groups.
The first Roman political organization to explicitly declare itself
anarchist or communist was the C. Cafiero Anarchist Communist Nucleus.
The Nucleus was formed on October 10, 1884, and grew out of the
experience of the Egalitarian Youth Circle that had hosted Errico
Malatesta. It consisted of about twenty members, all workers, and its
purpose was to promote socialist and anarchist propaganda among workers,
marking, for that time, the beginning of a new era.
Resistance now and forever!
