(en) Italy, Umanita Nova: "No to the Seafuture 2025 military-naval exhibition" (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Wed, 24 Sep 2025 08:36:35 +0300

WE RECEIVE AND PUBLISH ---- The Restiamo Umani-Riconvertiamo Seafuture Coordination Group announces its mobilization in September: "No to the Seafuture 2025 military-naval exhibition" ---- The Restiamo Umani Coordination Group (promoter of the demonstration against the genocide in Palestine and for the demilitarization of La Spezia on May 31st), in collaboration with the Riconvertiamo Seafuture Committee (which in recent years has organized counter-demonstrations in opposition to the warlike drift that has characterized Seafuture for years), consistently relaunches for this edition an invitation to all associations, groups, committees, and individuals to join and participate in building the mobilization "No to the Seafuture 2025 naval-war exhibition."

This synergy clearly demonstrates the strong antimilitarist, pacifist, and nonviolent sentiment present in the city of La Spezia and beyond. The following is an appeal in view of the initiatives and mobilization at the end of September.

"While Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank continues in the complicit silence of European institutions," the appeal reads, "the European Union has outlined an EUR800 billion rearmament plan, and NATO has forced member states to increase military spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product, diverting resources from welfare: healthcare, education, the environment, and infrastructure."

"In this scenario," the statement continues, "Italy, after decades of preparation, has explicitly chosen war and, accordingly, is organizing the "Seafuture 2025" show in La Spezia: a naval military exhibition to promote the business of defense and security companies, underpinned by environmental sustainability and technological innovation. The ninth edition of Seafuture, scheduled for September 29th to October 2nd at the Arsenale Militare Marittimo in La Spezia, organized in collaboration with the Italian Navy, confirms the radical transformation of the event over the years: from an event conceived in 2009 as "the first international fair in the Mediterranean region dedicated to innovation, research, development, and civilian technologies related to the sea," to a predominantly military exhibition, one of the few in Italy where the main participants are defense sector companies along with the navies of the invited states."

The event, the statement explains, has thus replaced the "Mostra Navale Italiana," effectively the "Mostra Navale Guerra," held in Genoa in the 1980s. It is no coincidence that the main sponsors of "Seafuture 2025" are the major companies in the military sector. As in recent editions, this year too, the "strategic importance" of the event is attributed to the "development of business opportunities" for national companies, institutions, and government agencies in the "defense sector." The event's international relevance is promoted through invitations to the navies and "National Delegations" (NADs) of over 140 countries, including many repressive regimes or those involved in nearly 60 ongoing wars, such as Israel, Morocco, Libya, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and many others.

"We cannot remain inactive in the face of all this," write the initiators of the appeal. "We have a moral and political duty to do everything possible to prevent it. The war begins at home: here we must work to prevent it alongside all people-children, innocent victims, military conscientious objectors, deserters-by engaging with everyone, starting with workers, who from all corners of the globe are calling on us to act now.

We are mobilizing to restore Seafuture to its original mission: an international Mediterranean trade fair dedicated to innovation, research, and the development of civilian marine technologies, to promote environmental and social sustainability."

"For this reason," the appeal concludes, "we invite all organizations and individuals who oppose the logic of war, violence, racism, and the enemy to join the appeal and, from September 27th to October 2nd, to form a week of mobilizations, initiatives, and nonviolent actions aimed at opposing the regime of war that Seafuture blatantly represents."
