(en) Greece, APO: Palestine means resistance - Group against patriarchy (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

*Announcement read at the beginning of the event "Trafficking - Cases of "Amaryllis", Kolonos, Ilioupoli/ Greek Police Mafia/ SLAPP Lawsuits/ Cover-up/ State Repression", at the 7th Eleftheriako Festival in Lampedona, on July 6th ---- Before we open the event we want to read an announcement, because while we are here, our heart beats in Palestine. It beats to the same beats as those of the children with the disarming gaze, when they form the victory sign with their fingers, because resistance is their very existence. It strikes for our sisters, the women and girls of Gaza, those who were murdered and those who survived, for the missing, for the prisoners, for the women who stood with stones in their hands against the Israeli soldiers, who cradle white sheets in their arms and comfort skeletal children, who are hungry and anxious for a little water, who give birth in the ruins of hospitals, who get sick and suffer without medicine, without painkillers, in camps for the displaced.

We cannot talk about patriarchy and gender-based violence without recognizing that genocide, ethnic cleansing, war, occupation, siege, apartheid, colonialism itself are, among other things, their most extreme expression. And that in these circumstances, the attempt to humiliate, degrade, subjugate and exterminate women is transformed into yet another tool for the annihilation of a people who resist, while their home, land, dreams and future were taken away from them. In fact, if we want to call ourselves human, we cannot talk about anything, but nothing else, if we close our eyes to what is happening in Palestine.

The violence of numbers is relentless. Since October 7, 2023 (when almost all Palestinian organizations decided to strike inside the occupied territories, that is, the land occupied by settlers), the state of Israel has murdered more than 57,000 Palestinians (June 2025), in an operation that constitutes the culmination of the long-term political extermination that has permeated the Zionist entity since its foundation and that today is trying to impose the "final solution". More than half of the dead are women and children. The displaced population is estimated at 2 million, that is, over 90% of the inhabitants of Gaza, a large part of whom are refugees anyway (Reuters, July 3, 2025). According to a UN report, in January 2025, 1 million of the displaced were women and girls, 110,000 were injured, 306,000 homes had been completely destroyed and 19,000 children had been orphaned, while the number of missing in the rubble is incalculable. Another UN report, in March 2025, stated that approximately 50,000 women in Gaza are pregnant and 130 give birth every day, without access to clean water, medicine and the necessary hygiene and care, since in addition the destruction of health infrastructure, as well as the murder of medical and nursing staff, are a targeted effort by the Israeli army in the extermination operation.

Sexual torture and sexual violence are commonplace. The testimonies collected in the report of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (May 2025) document practices by the Israeli army, such as "the forcing of men and women into public nudity, sexual abuse, the threat of death to men if they do not accept that their female relatives undress in front of soldiers and tanks, targeted attacks on genitals, threats of rape and even rape." They document "incidents of sexual and gender-based violence in more than 10 prisons in Israel, particularly in the Negev and Sde Teiman, as well as in the women's prisons of Damon and Hasharon. Female prisoners have faced sexual assaults[...]. Male prisoners report that they have been punched, kicked, hit with metal objects or even crushed in their genitals. Other men were raped. In Ofer prison, Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh died after the brutal sexual abuse he suffered" (Efsyn 8/5/2025).

At the same time, a pink washing campaign by the state of Israel and its Western allies attempts to legitimize colonial settlement and genocide, advertising that it is the only country in the Middle East that promotes gender equality and the recognition of the rights of LGBTQI people - apparently baptizing participation in the IDF's murderous units as equality). Feminism is being turned into a weapon to dehumanize the population under extermination, to neutralize solidarity, to extract silence and consent, to justify the massacre.

A multitude of voices are rising against this campaign, such as the 2023 "Feminist Manifesto - Anticolonialism is a Feminist Issue", which states: "We understand feminism as a liberatory theory and practice that fights against injustice and oppression, that seeks primarily justice and the elimination of inequalities. Palestinian resistance in all its forms is a just-legitimate practice to combat a ruthless colonial system, which has consistently abused and denied life to millions of people for decades. We applaud it and consider it an integral part of our struggle for a just world.[...]Colonial and liberal narratives attempt to construct a single model of feminism: the feminism of white bodies in the metropolises (Europe and North America). It is a form of feminism that is confined to the so-called 'human rights' framework created by colonial powers and used to maintain their interests. Liberal feminism is disturbed by any deviation from this model and seeks to nullify and eliminate it. Consequently, our own feminism is met with disdain and skepticism because it advocates liberatory practices that both challenge and threaten existing colonial and patriarchal systems - and the armed resistance of the Palestinian people is one of these practices."

For us, as anarchists, as women and activists, the same reasons that place us unwaveringly on the side of those fighting in Palestine unite us with our sisters in Iran, with the political prisoners in Evin prison who simultaneously had to face Israeli bombings, but also violence, mock executions, persecution by the Iranian regime... With our sisters who paid with their blood for the uprising under the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom", after the murder of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the police. With the women suffering the consequences of the war in Sudan, the immigrants who rebel against the ICE pogroms in America, the indigenous Zapatistas in Mexico, the women who fight against disappearances, femicide, rape and for the self-determination of their bodies in East and West. With those imprisoned in the prisons and refugee concentration camps of the Greek state, and with comrades Marianna M. and Dimitra (remanded together with Nikos Romanos, Dimitris and A.K. after the explosion in Ampelokipi and the death of comrade Kyriakos Xymitiris). They unite us with all women, all people who fight against state and capitalist barbarity, who fight for a free and just world for all.

We will close with the words of Fatima Hassouna, the 25-year-old girl who used her camera to record everyday scenes from Gaza and whose testimonies formed the material for the documentary by the exiled Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi. Fatima was murdered along with her family in their home in Gaza on April 16, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike.

For 300 days, Ania, my camera and my only friend, who knows how to capture things in her lens, to take the photos I want, has accompanied me. For 300 days, my brothers and I have been murdered in this massacre. Blood flows on the ground and I tremble at the moment when the blood of my brothers will reach me, its stains will stain my clothes. For 300 days we have seen only black and red, we have breathed the smell of death, we have eaten bitter fruits and we have only touched corpses.

This is the first time I have experienced such a massive loss. I have lost 11 members of my family, my most beloved. And yet, nothing stops me. I wander the streets every day, without a plan. I simply want the world to see what I see[...]

We, we who die every day, a death that takes on all forms and shades. I die a thousand times when I see a child suffering. I break into a thousand pieces, only my ashes remain. What we have become hurts me. This nonsense hurts me and the monster that devours us every day: it hurts.

Every day, as I leave, my mother says goodbye to me, but I don't turn to look. I don't want to face that look. I don't want so much grief for my mother, but what is left of this city? Only death.

Speaking of death, inevitable death:

If I have to die, I want a death that will resonate everywhere. I don't want to become just another news story, just another number among so many. I want a death that the whole world will know about, whose imprint will remain indelibly engraved, in everlasting photographs, that they will never be able to bury anywhere.
