In February 2023, a series of podcasts Jean-Marie Le Pen, l'obsession
nationale is broadcast on the France Inter website. The producer
Philippe Colin affirms, in addition to the words of the historian
Benjamin Stora, that "soldier Le Pen undoubtedly did not practice
torture in Algeria". Fabrice Riceputi, like others, is amazed. If during
its radio broadcast, in the summer of 2023, the comment was modified
saying that "we cannot prove that Jean-Marie Le Pen was tortured in
Algeria but it is a possibility", basically nothing change, Le Pen is
cleared. Yet he himself affirmed in November 1962: "I have nothing to
hide. I tortured because I had to."
Fabrice Riceputi, former student of Pierre Vidal-Naquet, co-host with
historian Malika Rahal of the site 1000autre.org which documents cases
of violence, torture and executions committed by the French army in
Algeria, then launches into an operation salutary : document as a
historian the practices of MP Jean-Marie Le Pen, who volunteered as a
lieutenant in the 1st Foreign Parachute Regiment in Algeria and who took
part in the first months of what the authorities called the "battle of
Algiers".
Fabrice Riceputi then methodically takes up all the pieces of the file
which he meticulously restores: the changes in Le Pen's versions over
the decades and his political rise; his stay as a volunteer during his
four months in Algeria; his "bloody journey" in Algiers and finally the
undertaking, so far relatively profitable, of calling into question the
credibility of Algerian witnesses and victims.
Riceputi's work perfectly illustrates the systemic racism that has
persisted since colonial times. Systemic racism of which Le Pen was one
of the most zealous promoters and which, even today, smears the victims
and whitewashes the executioners. But from now on, once this work is
closed, we will be able to affirm following Pierre Vidal-Naquet that "it
would be defaming Le Pen to say that he did not torture".
