(en) Germany, Die Platform: Report from the large demonstration in Cologne: Freedom for Öcalan and all prisoners of the Kurdish freedom movement! (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation

Date Mon, 11 Mar 2024 09:17:36 +0200

On February 17th, a major demonstration by the Kurdish freedom movement for the liberation of Abdullah Öcalan took place in Cologne. Tens of thousands of people from all over Western Europe took part. Platform comrades from North Rhine-Westphalia took part in the internationalist bloc together with comrades from our French sister organization Union communiste libertaire and other anarchists. ---- After an opening rally at the Deutzer Werft, the demonstration moved under a sea of white flags with Öcalan's portrait to the Severins Bridge, which began to vibrate under the weight of the many thousands of people. We then went back over the left bank of the Rhine and the Deutzer Bridge to the Deutzer Werft, where a wide program of speeches and cultural contributions took place until the afternoon.

The day was only marred by the harassment of the authorities, who had tried early on to make life difficult for the organizers with conditions. For example, they wanted to stop the sale of food and drink. On the day itself, the North Rhine-Westphalia police lived up to their reputation as thugs of the German and Turkish states. On several occasions they stormed into the demonstration to drag out people who were allegedly randomly shouting banned slogans.

The ongoing suppression of the Kurdish freedom movement by the German state shows how necessary it is that we as internationalists continue to stand in solidarity with the Kurdish freedom movement. She is an ally for us anarchists - regardless of whether we fight side by side with her, as in Rojava, or arm in arm with the German or French state, as here in Europe. Our common perspective is: for the liberation of women and down with patriarchy, for democratic self-government at all levels of society, for an ecological perspective against capitalist environmental destruction.

Freedom for Öcalan and all prisoners of the Kurdish freedom movement!
Solidarity with Kurdistan!
Long live internationalism!
