On Tuesday January 23, 2024, Tal Mitnick, an 18-year-old Israeli 
conscientious objector, was sentenced for the second time to 30 days in 
prison. The Israeli army had already imposed a first detention period of 
30 days in December. ---- On December 26, Tal Mitnick publicly declared 
his conscientious objection to the Tal Hashomer recruiting center. He 
was later arrested and sentenced to 30 days in military prison. He is 
the first Israeli conscientious objector to be imprisoned for his 
refusal since the start of the Israeli-Palestinian war.
In his statement, Tal Mitnick said:
"There is no military solution to a political problem. This is why I 
refuse to join an army that believes the real problem can be ignored. On 
October 7, Israeli society experienced an unprecedented trauma in the 
country's history. In a horrific invasion, the Hamas terrorist 
organization murdered hundreds of innocent civilians and kidnapped 
hundreds more, families were murdered in their homes, young people were 
massacred at a rave and 240 people were kidnapped in the Gaza Strip. 
After the terrorist attack, a campaign of revenge began not only against 
Hamas, but against the entire Palestinian people. Indiscriminate bombing 
of neighborhoods and refugee camps in the Gaza Strip, full military and 
political support for settler violence in the West Bank, and political 
persecution on an unprecedented scale in Israel. I refuse to believe 
that more violence will bring security. I refuse to participate in a 
vendetta. I do not want to participate in the perpetuation of oppression 
and the cycle of bloodshed, but rather work directly towards a solution, 
and that is why I refuse to join the military. I love this country and 
its people because it is my home. I sacrifice myself and I work so that 
this country is a country that respects others, a country where we can 
live with dignity.»
