Africana Student Cultural Center
825 Washington Ave at Ontario St (Stadium Village Mall)
Room 108

-Twin Cities Coalition to Defend Mumia Abu-Jamal-.

-----------------------------------------------

O PERDER A MUMIA

Recuerde:

Cedar & Riverside, West Bank, Minneapolis.
(llame al: 00 1 651-649-4579 para la confirmación)

   (...)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUMIA!

April 24 is Mumia's 47th birthday (and his 20th birthday behind bars).
We're throwing a big party for him on Tuesday!

Tuesday, April 24, 7:30 p.m.
Africana Student Cultural Center
825 Washington Ave at Ontario St (Stadium Village Mall)
Room 108

The coalition has had the great fortune of having a number of student
interns working with us this semester. One of their projects is this
birthday tribute to Mumia. Plans include a video clip, dancing, poetry and
a birthday cake. Please come out for some fun and to support Mumia and the
work of our student interns.

This event is cosponsored by Africana Student Cultural Center and the Twin
Cities Coalition to Defend Mumia Abu-Jamal.

-----------------------------------------------

DAY X MAY BE COMING SOON

Mumia may be having his first day in Federal court quite soon. In a recent
ruling, Judge William Yohn gave Mumia only 30 days in which to find new
counsel. Mumia had submitted a petition to dismiss his current legal team
due to a cited conflict of interests. Thus Mumia could be called back to
court any time after May 7th, and Mumia's fateful hearing ("Day-X") will
likely be scheduled for soon thereafter. This is Mumia's last guaranteed
appeal, and if it is rejected in whole by the federal court, a death
warrant would likely be signed immediately!

At issue, will be Mumia's request for an evidentiary hearing. If granted,
this would permit Mumia to bring in all the new evidence that had been
blocked by the original trial judge, Albert Sabo. This is the evidence that
could prove Mumia's innocence, yet it remains inadmissible in court WITHOUT
the granting of this simple request.

There are also 29 constitutional/procedural issues to be considered, and a
finding in favor of Mumia on any single one, would result in an overturning
of Mumia's conviction and his freedom, or at least a new trial.

However there is nothing stopping Yohn from turning a blind eye to the
overwhelming legal strength of Mumia's appeal, and rubber-stamping the
frame-up. Nothing, that is, besides ALL OF US! For on "Day-X" when Mumia
finally has his "day in court," he will be joined by thousands of angry
supporters demanding his freedom! The outpouring of support in Philadelphia
will be joined by solidarity actions around the world, so that Yohn cannot
proceed in darkness. WE MUST JOIN MUMIA IN PHILADELPHIA ON DAY-X, AND STOP
THE FRAME-UP ONCE AND FOR ALL!!

We are calling that "Day-X", because we don't when it will be, but we do
know where we will be: Philadelphia! Judge Yohn may announce the date of
that hearing on very very short notice, so our plans have to be made in
advance. We will work fast to fill our bus to Philly so people from the
Twin Cities can physically stand with Mumia in Federal court. See if you
can prepare to take off on short notice to get on the bus to Philly for
this historic event!

In addition to that action in Philly, we will have a rally in Minneapolis
on the day AFTER we learn that Day-X has been set. You will be informed by
email as soon as we learn of that announcement. You can also check our
hotline to confirm the date of such an action (651-649-4579).

Remember, this may be Mumia's final appeal. We can't just wait for a new
death warrant to make sure that they are serious about killing Mumia -- we
already KNOW that they're dead serious! In 1995 Mumia came within 10 days
of being executed before our pressure caused the government to relent. We
have use our power, or we'll lose Mumia!!

Remember:

RALLY the Day After Day X is Announced
Gather at 5:00 p.m. at Cedar & Riverside, West Bank, Minneapolis.
   (Call 651-649-4579 for confirmation)

STAND PHYSICALLY WITH MUMIA IN PHILADELPHIA on Day-X
A bus from the Twin Cities is being organized.
Once the date is announced, we may have only
a few days to fill the bus, so reserve your spot now.
Fare is $105 round-trip with some partial scholarships
available. Call 651-649-4579 for reservations, or to
   request more info.

In the unusual event that Yohn issues a decision without holding a court
session, there will be a demonstration immediately organized -- check your
email or the hotline.

----------------------------------------------------

MAY 12: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY FOR MUMIA

Across the U.S. and around the world, May 12 will be marked as an
international day of solidarity with Mumia and we are doing our part here
in the Twin Cities. The timing of these actions is especially important
since Mumia is likely to go to Federal court very soon. We must show the
government that there is a strong national and international movement
prepared to resist the execution of Mumia. Don't wait to show your
support--NOW IS THE TIME TO GET INVOLVED! To help organize this
demonstration, come to our Wednesday meetings. Try to get support from your
organizations, and bring out your friends. It will be at:

RALLY and MARCH to FREE MUMIA!
Saturday, May 12
3:00 p.m.

Corner of Chicago & Franklin
Minneapolis

-------------------------------------------

MAYDAY CELEBRATIONS

Mayday is a sure sign of spring and a sure sign of increased political
activity around the Twin Cities (and around the world where workers take to
the streets!). Like last year, there will be two Mayday events in the Twin
Cities and we will participate in both. These events have been among our
most important opportunities for getting out the word about Mumia and we
need lots of volunteers to help, especially on May 6. We are also looking
for a truck to help move the booth materials into and out of the park.
Please join us if you can! Call our hotline at 651-649-4579 to offer your
help.

If you live in a different city, consider passing out Mumia information at
local Mayday events. That is where you are likely to reach those who will
stand with Mumia and protest on Day-X. If you do live in the Twin Cities,
meet us at these times:

Tuesday, May 1st:
11:00 a.m.
Meet at Peavey Park, corner of Chicago & Franklin
March with our contingent (look for our beautiful Mumia banner!).

Sunday, May 6th:
Meet at 12 Noon
25th St & 18th Ave S.
We will march in the Free Speech area of the Mayday parade and distribute
literature along the way. We will also have a booth in Powderhorn park. We
need folks to help in the march and at the booth.

STATEMENT OF LEONARD PELTIER ON THE FTAA
April 17, 2001

Dear Brothers, Sisters, Friends and Supporters,
I know many of you are already familiar with the FTAA, NAFTA, the WTO,
the IMF and the World Bank. I know many of you are working hard to expose
what these organizations and agreements are all about and how they are taking
over the world and violating human rights, labor rights, Indigenous rights,
environmental protections, and sovereignty rights, in each and every place
they
set foot. Therefore, what I would like to address is the bigger picture -
the real
roots of the FTAA and ways which we can obstruct it.
Where did the FTAA get its start? Not in a conference room and not in an
office. The FTAA is a continuation of the imperialism that began thousands of
years ago in Europe with the domination of Indigenous Peoples whose self-
subsisting land and way of life were taken away so that greedy feudalists
could
reign. Ever since, Indigenous Peoples have been forced into submission, if
not
obliteration, in the name of civilization and progress all over the globe.
Here we
are in the 21st century, and the world has far from benefited. I do not
need to
explain the Earth's devastation, the overwhelming poverty, and the wars that
have resulted from practices that put profit before the very survival of
Mother
Earth and the human race.
Advocates of the FTAA would not dare refer to their policies as forms of
colonization or feudalism because these practices are now widely scorned.
Instead they will justify their actions in the name of "development" for the
"poor" countries of Central and South America. Development? What the first
peoples of the Americas need is "recovery" not development. Recovery from
the very same colonization, domination, and genocide that multi-national
corporations want to perpetuate for their own gains today.
Now we must continue, not only to condemn the practices of these trade
organizations and policies, but also to implement and support means of self-
sufficiency both in our communities and abroad. We must support Indigenous
movements like that of the Zapatistas and the Uwa who are fighting to
maintain
their land base and self-sufficient way of life. We must support the small
farmers and farm workers who provide their communities with healthy foods to
eat. We must create and support innovative projects on Indian reservations,
in
inner cities and in third world countries that promote self-sufficiency and
better
living conditions.
But in doing this, we must unite beyond the boundaries of race, class, belief
systems, and age that all too often divide us. If we do not unite, we will be
defeated one by one, just as they destroyed the American Indian Movement
who fought so hard for Native sovereignty, the Black Panthers, who developed
much needed community based programs and struggled for self-determination,
the movements in Central America that sought to implement schools, social
programs, and land reform, and the unions who fought for humane working
conditions. Most important, we must break down the barriers that divide us in
our own backyards.
We need to develop a global culture that teaches us, as my ancestors did, to
think carefully about the impact our actions and policies will have on Mother
Earth, on each other, and on future generations before we act upon them. If
we
can do this, then surely we can win.
In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, Leonard Peltier

Mumia's request to change legal counsel. Contrary to the report in the

PRINCETON THEOLOGIAN CONDEMNS U.S. PENAL SYSTEM
MINNEAPOLIS (April 6, 2001) - In The Executed God, theologian Mark Lewis
Taylor dares to address the meaning of Jesus' execution for an American
culture that now maintains more than 3,600 U.S. residents on the death rows
of its burgeoning prisons. Drawing on 25 years of involvement in prison
reform, Taylor passionately describes and explains the excesses and
injustices in our corrections system and capital punishment to foster
compassionate and effective Christian action.
Since 1980 the number of prisoners in the United States has tripled to over 2
million people, 70 percent of them people of color. This growth industry
currently employs 523,000 people. Among abuses that Taylor notes in this
"theater of terror" are capital punishment, inordinate sentencing, violations
of fairness in both process and results, racism in the justice system and
prisons, prison rape and other terrorizing techniques, and paramilitary
policing practices. The book is a call to conscience for all Christian
Americans who in effect support the prison system and the death penalty by
not protesting the injustice of the system or speaking out against it.
The victims of the iniquities of the penal system and the death penalty are
mostly poor, underprivileged, scorned people who have been rejected by a
system of imperialistic, capitalistic wealth, Taylor argues. Whether the
convicted are actually guilty of murder or other heinous crimes seems to be
largely irrelevant to the government that executes them-just as it was
irrelevant to the Romans who crucified Jesus Christ whether or not they
believed he was truly a traitor to the empire.

Taylor's work examines what he sees as a maze of hypocrisy and moral
confusion and offers a constructive proposal of how and why Christian
practice might provide alternative approaches to the present consolidation of
prison building, police excessive force and the death penalty.
"A powerful critique of America as Empire and the challenge it poses for all
who believe in the way of Jesus."
-James H. Cone, Union Theological Seminary, New York
"Mark Taylor's absorbing examination of our shameful execution obsession is
without a doubt the finest and most discerning theological analysis of the
death penalty now available. There is no doubt that the question is once
again back in the public eye, and this graphic and penetrating book will
surely help focus the discussion we all need."
-Harvey Cox, Harvard Divinity School
Whatever happens in the next century, The Executed God will remain an
essential document of Christian conscience from this troubled time.

WORKERS WORLD LEADERS VISIT MUMIA IN PRISON

Special to Workers World
Waynesburg, Pa.

Larry Holmes and Monica Moorehead, national leaders of
Workers World Party, met with award-winning journalist and
political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal on April 14 at the
isolated SCI Greene Unit in Waynesburg, Pa. Waynesburg is
located an hour outside of Pittsburgh.

Moorehead and Holmes, along with the late Key Martin, had
also videotaped an interview with Abu-Jamal in March 1996
entitled "The Prison-Industrial Complex."

Moorehead and Holmes found Abu-Jamal to be very upbeat and
in good spirits--despite the fact that he has spent almost
19 years on death row, is confined to a prison cell 23 hour
a day and is subjected to the inhumane policy of sensory
deprivation.

Abu-Jamal was tightly handcuffed during the non-contact
visit.

Holmes and Moorehead spent the better part of two hours with
Abu-Jamal discussing the anti-globalization movement, the
impact of the recent rebellion in Cincinnati's Black
community ignited by the racist murder of 19-year-old
Timothy Thomas, the ongoing campaign to broaden political
support for Abu-Jamal and much more.

Abu-Jamal gave Moorehead and Holmes an update on his legal
situation. In early March, Abu-Jamal filed a petition in the
United States District Court for the Eastern District of
Pennsylvania requesting that attorneys Leonard Weinglass and
Dan Williams be dismissed as his legal counsel due to
"violations of client/lawyer confidentiality."

On April 6, Judge William Yohn issued a ruling stating that
Abu-Jamal's motion for withdrawal of counsel was "ordered
and decreed." The ruling added that the court "will not
conduct oral argument, an evidentiary hearing, or issue an
opinion concerning the pending petition for habeas corpus
relief for a period of at least 30 days from the date of
this order so that petitioner [Abu-Jamal] may have an
opportunity for new counsel to enter an appearance."

Abu-Jamal did not receive an official copy of this ruling
until April 13. Neither the court nor either of his former
attorneys informed him of the ruling. He read an article
about the ruling in the Philadelphia Inquirer earlier in the
week. The Inquirer wrongly reported that the judge had
allowed Abu-Jamal 60 days instead of 30 days.

Abu-Jamal told Moorehead and Holmes that it was no accident
that the Inquirer printed this error as a conscious maneuver
to attempt to disorient and confuse the political movement.

Political supporters of Abu-Jamal have been waiting for over
a year for Yohn to announce a date to hear oral arguments on
whether the death-row prisoner will be granted the right to
have an evidentiary hearing to allow all suppressed evidence
from his original trial to finally be heard.

In the meantime, Yohn dismissed two friend-of-the-court
amicus briefs last year. The briefs outlined how Abu-Jamal
was denied his constitutional right to the legal counsel of
his choice. And it documented how his original court-
appointed lawyer, Anthony Jackson, conspired with the
prosecutor and judge to convict Abu-Jamal for the murder of
Daniel Faulkner, a white police officer.

These violations clearly indicate why Abu-Jamal should be
freed. He has been denied the right to legally represent
himself by the federal district court while he pursues a new
legal team.

CAMP 'FREE MUMIA!'

The International Action Center has initiated an encampment
calling for the freedom of Mumia Abu-Jamal in front of
Philadelphia City Hall the weekend of May 11-13.

Activists are being encouraged to bring sleeping bags,
tents, enough food and water for two nights and three days
to help bring national attention to Abu-Jamal's case and its
inextricable ties to the struggle against the death penalty,
police brutality and other forms of racist repression.

This encampment is part of an international day of
solidarity with Mumia Abu-Jamal. And it coincides with the
16th anniversary of the U.S. government's terrorist bombing
of the MOVE headquarters--a revolutionary Black
organization.

That government firestorm slaughtered 11 women, children and
men on May 13, 1985.

The International Action Center will be organizing Free
Mumia anti-globalization brigades at the upcoming anti-FTAA
protests at Quebec City to help mobilize anti-capitalist
youth activists to come to Philadelphia for the "Free Mumia"
encampment.
