RALLY: Wedensday, April 25, 1:00 pm

Rally in support of those arrested in Quebec,
52 Police Division, Dundas St, Toronto
 just west of University Avenue.

Rallies were held Monday and Tuesday and may
continue until those arrested in Quebec have
 been released.

More than 400 people were arrested in Quebec City.

Information is incomplete at the moment.

It seems that:
- some arrestees have been held up to 10 hours
on school buses without access to water or toilets
- very rough treatment
- men and women strip searched in view of guards, police
  and other prisoners
- naked prisoners hosed down to wash off tear gas and
  pepper spray
- prisoners denied Habeus Corpus
- prisoners to be held maximum of three days before a bail hearing
- denied access to lawyer
- thirty prisoners have joined in "jail solidarity", claiming
that they have not committed any offence and want to see a
lawyer as a group and be treated as a group
- women prisoners denied sanitary napkins (tear-gas may
  cause menstruation)
- prisoners experiencing vomiting and diarhea from drinking
the prison water which may be unsanitary
- prisoners not being brought before a judge, as required by
law, but only appearing on closed-circuit television from
  prison

Toronto Star, April 24

Pierre Morneau said he was stripped and hosed down with
    a group of other protesters.

''One of us asked them, `What are we contaminated with?''
    said Morneau.

''They told us, `You're contaminated with the scum that you are.''

Toronto Mobilization for Global Justice urges you to attend
a solidarity rally on Wednesday, April 25, 1:00 pm at 52 Division.
Dundas St just west of University Avenue.

We hope to have more information by then.

Tooker Gomberg, Angela Bischoff and Jaggi Singh
 are amongst the prisoners.

Please let me know if you have any more info.

 See you there........!!!!!

 Bob Olsen, Toronto

The (anti-FTAA) Quebec Medical Team writes:

"The propellants and/or active ingredients (in tear gas) can cause cancer,
are mutagenic and hence potentially teratogenic. One form of tear gas (CN)
used during the WTO is 50% solvent - the solvent, methylene chloride, is a
highly toxic chemical which can cause altered central nervous system
function....

>There are reports from Seattle of a higher than usual number of women
>exposed to chemical weapons experiencing spontaneous menstruation beyond
>the norm for a stressful event. At least one spontaneous abortion - or
>miscarriage - was reported. Some women reported irregular periods
>persisting for months after the event. This may be due to the methylene
>chloride propellant."

Subject: Systematic abuse of political prisoners at Orsainvile Prison
Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 16:14:33 -0400

The following account is from a phone call from a detained political
prisoner in the Orsainvile Prison received by Stephen Kerr, of the
Toronto Mobilization for Global Justice.

Report from jailed comrades..............

Two women are being held in jail who are practising jail solidarity
together. They refuse to identify themselves. Their spirits are high, though
they are both on a hunger strike. They have not eaten anything other than
water since their arrest on Saturday night.

People's rights are being systematically abused and denied at the
Orsainvile Prison. People were arrested on Saturday were held on a bus for
12 hours, denied food water or the use of toilet facilities. When they were
unloaded, they were forced to strip naked surrounded by a crowd of riot
police who were joking, smoking and making obscene comments and sick jokes.

Inside the prison, men are being held six to a cell meant only for one
person. Some people were hosed down with water. The tap water in the prison
has been contaminated, as nearly everybody who drinks it has become sick
with diarrhea.

Prisoners have been systematically denied their right to appear before a
judge. They have been brought to a room with a monitor connected to a
courtroom. There are lawyers present only in the courtroom, not physically
with the prisoners. This is illegal and the prisoners have refused to
co-operate with this practice. We do not recognise its legality either. One
prisoner, whose name and alias are withheld to protect her practice of jail
solidarity, told the judge that he was the one breaking the law! The
prisoners practising jail solidarity have been given until tomorrow to
identify themselves. It is not clear what the consequences of continued jail
solidarity will be, but clearly the warning is indented as an intimidation
tactic.

Come to the next rally to demand the unconditional release of all political
prisoners, and the dropping of all charges against them!
