(en) Italy, UCADI #182: Meloni in good living rooms (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 17 Mar 2024 08:23:21 +0200

Since she became prime minister, Meloni has started frequenting the high society of Brussels. she and she more and more often she is framed in affable conversation with Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola. The Italian Prime Minister has entered the community political arena, elbowing her way and making it clear that she can be very useful as a mediator in relations with the extreme (right-wing) wings of the political spectrum: her good relations with Orban which we have recently seen put to the test are significant. Strengthened by these first attempts, the Italian Prime Minister maneuvers to introduce other associates of hers and uses the fateful phrase as a calling card: "he is with me", to accredit Éric Justin Léon Zemmour and Marion Jeanne Caroline Maréchal, leaders of the French Nazi-fascist party Reconquête, as well as the neo-Nazis of Alternative for Deutscheland preparing their entry into the European Conservatives and reformists, with the aim of clearing them and calling them to be part of the new alliance which will elect the new Commission after the European elections.
Competing with her is her ally-competitors in Italy Salvini, not so much because he seems to be the one who maintains the best relations with Marie Le Pen, a possible candidate in the presidential elections in France, but because he seems to be the one who has the best relations with the winner of the Dutch elections, Wilders. Its objective, not surprisingly, is to consolidate relations with the farmers' parties that are emerging all over Europe, a danger that we have long pointed out as the poisoned fruit of the policy of supporting the war, to an unconditional entry of Ukraine in the European Union, without evaluating the economic consequences of this choice for the other countries of the Union.
The farmers are aware of having been identified by the Brussels bureaucracy as the social group on which to draw, causing both the weight of the green policy and the costs of the war to fall mainly on it, starting from the belief that until now this sector has been largely privileged by the budget and community policy. Therefore they mobilize and rebel, strengthened by the fact that it is difficult to get in front of a person driving a tractor and try to convince him to retreat: tractors are not attacked easily by the police! With their mobilization the farmers have gone to the heart of the problem, hitting the community budget and making it clear that in the current economic economic phase the role of the various production factors must be reviewed if we want to continue pursuing the creation of a green economy; that the times and methods of the program must be remodulated and that, in any case, the simultaneous conduct of the war with the aim of achieving a reconversion of the production model are obviously economically incompatible.
This obvious truth does not appear to be shared in the political debate of the parties that are going to the European elections with the result that the new Commission will be without a mandate on this essential issue and that therefore everything will be resolved in a blank delegation to the Brussels bureaucrats, without that the citizens of the Union take the decisions necessary to steer European politics towards positive outcomes.

The internal consequences of the European vote

Having set aside what would be the real themes of the debate, the European elections will be used in Italy to measure the strength of the consensus towards the Government but above all to verify the consistency of the balance of power between the parties of the coalition and resolve a dispute which agitates the two sides. Within the right-wing one they will serve to measure how much consensus Meloni has managed to erode within the League and Forza Italia and vice versa; within the left they will serve to sanction the distance between 5 Star Movement and PD or, if you prefer, between Conti and Schlein.
The conditions for poor electoral participation are all there but how can we blame the voters for having been knowingly expropriated of any possibility of expressing themselves on the real issues of the dispute, pronouncing on the future steps of community politics if none of the contenders presented themselves with a clear program it is the misunderstanding on these crucial issues for the future of Europe.
