communities with a strong ideological character.
All this occurs despite the fact that the Geneva Convention prohibits an 
occupying power from transferring its own civilian population into 
occupied territories. Consequently, the international 
community-including the European Union and the UN-officially regards all 
West Bank settlements as illegal under international law, regardless of 
the individual residents' countries of origin. In reality, however, a 
sense of shame regarding the Holocaust-compounded by even deeper, 
entrenched economic ties between states and Israel, as well as pressure 
from economically powerful and politically well-connected Jewish 
lobbies-ensures a complicit tolerance and indifference toward the rights 
of Palestinians. These Palestinians see their lands occupied and razed, 
face repression and killing at the hands of both the military and

unjustified.
