PUBLICATIONS

These books can be ordered from your usual bookseller or from libertarian bookstores... but not from CIRA

ACROBATIE. Spirus Gay (1865-1938) was an anarchist close to the naturists, but also an acrobat, a show organizer, and a trade union activist. Furthermore, he was an educator and a pioneer of physical culture, inspired by the principles of Paul Robin. But that's not all: he was also a naturist, atheist, anticlerical, freethinker, Freemason, environmentalist, antiracist, antisexist, and animal lover...

Spirus Gay: The Anarchist Acrobat by Sylvain Wagnon. Les éditions du Monde libertaire, 2025. 156 pages. (Our History). 10 euros.

AERNOULT, DURAND AND ROUSSET. Jules Durand (1880-1926), an anarchist and trade unionist from Le Havre, was the secretary of the coal miners' union. In 1910, he was one of the main organizers of an indefinite strike against the expansion of mechanization and the high cost of living. Following a conspiracy, he was accused of being the "moral instigator" of the murder of a foreman, who had actually died in a drunken brawl. He was sentenced to death, but following a major public outcry, this sentence was commuted to seven years' imprisonment. Émile Rousset (1883-1961), for his part, witnessed the murder of Albert Aernoult at the Biribi military prison. Having denounced this crime, he was imprisoned and then released following a protest movement uniting the entire left wing. After the First World War, during which he was again mobilized, he became active in anarchist circles.
Aernoult, Durand, and Rousset: Three Poor Man's Dreyfus Affair in the Belle Époque by Patrice Rannou. Noir et Rouge, 2026. 123 pages. EUR14.

DYSTOPIA. The Hundredth Monkey is the first part of a dystopian, dark, and masterful epic, with a breathless pace, depicting a France gripped by its demons: nuclear accident, devastated regions, vigilance committees, nationalism... It is followed by The Subcontractors. This standalone sequel features numerous characters caught up in a captivating plot. The author successfully blends police investigation, political thriller, and reflection on the future of our society.
The Hundredth Monkey by Stéphane Lanos. La Lanterne, 2022. 632 pages. EUR13. The Subcontractors by Stéphane Lanos. La Lanterne, 2025. 472 pages. EUR22.

STIG DAGERMAN. Stig Dagerman (1923-1954) was the author of novels, short stories, plays, poems, reportage, and essays. He was active in the Swedish libertarian trade union SAC (Sveriges Arbetares Centralorganisation) and was the editor of its newspaper, Arbetaren. He committed suicide at the age of thirty-one, at the height of his literary fame but suffering from writer's block. His work is driven by a denunciation of the social and political situation and a search for truth, supported by a critical perspective on the role of states and interpersonal relationships. He was also a master of irony. *The Midsummer Cold* is a collection of short stories that blend autobiography and observations. In addition, Agone and Quiero are reissuing a selection of his essays, articles, and letters.
*The Midsummer Cold* by Stig Dagerman. Maurice Nadeau, 2026. 208 pages. (Paperback). EUR9.90. Our Need for Consolation Is Insatiable and Sixteen Other Texts by Stig Dagerman. Agone, 2025. 160 pages. (Elements). EUR10. The Only Insane Thing Is to Accept the Possible by Stig Dagerman. Quiero, 2025. 96 pages. EUR15.

ANTIMILITARIANISM. Mireille Mercier-Balaz Pinós recounts the 1970s, and more specifically the era of anarchists and antimilitarists, in the form of a substantial novel. The story begins in Villefranche-sur-Saône. A group of high school students participates in the movement against the Debré Law, which aimed to abolish military deferments. Some of them will take a more radical approach to refusing military service by becoming draft dodgers. The story is a beautiful portrait of those years through counterculture, poetry, music, and love stories.
*Spring Will Always Insist* by Mireille Mercier-Balaz Pinós. Le Lys bleu, 2026. 516 pages. 26 euros.

MURRAY BOOKCHIN. No one should follow and adopt another's ideas without intellectually and personally testing them. With the detachment of scholarship, Philippe Pelletier applies this exercise to Murray Bookchin in order to examine his sources and the development of his thought. Certainly, revisiting Bookchin to rid him of the dross of scientism, evolutionism, and catastrophism is a good thing because it allows the idea of social ecology to reach its full potential.
Social Ecology in Question: Revisiting Murray Bookchin by Philippe Pelletier. Les Éditions Libertaires, 2025. 306 pages. (Here and Now). 25 euros.

GEORGES BRASSENS. Jean-Pierre Caralp is a teacher. He is the author of novels and short stories. Passionate about the work of the anarchist singer Georges Brassens (1921-1981), he analyzes all the criticisms leveled against him: misogyny, nostalgia, pseudo-anarchism, pseudo-poet... These controversies serve as a guiding thread for a thorough re-reading of Brassens's lyrics.
Brassens, a Myth Under Scrutiny by Jean-Pierre Caralp. Cap de l'Étang, 2026. 278 pages. (L'École de Narbonne). 30 euros.

HOAXMAN. In Belle Époque Paris, the leap from propaganda by deed to outright hoax was a short one, and Marius Tournadre took it. His penchant for mystification, hoaxes, and even swindling elicits a smile, but a wry one, almost embarrassed by not knowing what to make of some of his pranks. Promoter of himself or of the revolution? Perhaps a bit of both. A colorful, fleetingly famous figure, somewhere between comedy and tragedy.
Marius Tournadre: Anarchist-Prankster: Public Entertainer No. 1 of the Belle Époque by Pierre Moulier. Éditions de la Flandonnière, 2022. 204 pages. 19 euros.

FRANS MASEREEL. Frans Masereel (1889-1972) was featured in CIRA Newsletter No. 268 on the occasion of an exhibition dedicated to him in Épinal (Vosges). Youth is a series of wood engravings telling a wordless story. With a preface by Thomas Mann, this book is a call to hope addressed to young people. From Idea to The Idea is a collaborative work that explores the history of a masterpiece of animated film directed by Berthold Bartosch, based on a graphic edition by Frans Masereel.
Children's illustrations by Frans Masereel, text by Thomas Mann. Lugano (Switzerland): Pagine d'arte, 2026. 80 pages. 24 euros. From Idea to The Idea: From Masereel to Bartosch: A Work in Motion. Les éditions de l'OEil, 2026. 352 pages + 1 DVD. 35 euros.

PEDAGOGIES. Class Issues is primarily a collaborative website focused on social struggles and practices aimed at emancipation. The Dictionary of Critical Pedagogies seeks to provide an overview of current practices and reflections. Critical pedagogies consider social relations within the educational field. They challenge systems of domination. Dictionary of Critical Pedagogies
. Class Issues, 2026. 400 pages. 20 euros.

PHILATELY:
ALEXANDRE GROTHENDIECK. On June 12, 2025, the French postal service, La Poste, issued a stamp bearing the image of Alexandre Grothendieck (1928-2014). The son of anarchist activists, this mathematical genius was one of the founders of the radical environmental group Survivre et Vivre (Survive and Live). Étienne de La Boétie. On May 18, 1926, the French postal service, La Poste, issued a stamp dedicated to Étienne de La Boétie (1530-1563), the author of the famous Discourse on Voluntary Servitude. In it, he argues that tyranny is not based on force but rather on the voluntary obedience of individuals. This postage stamp, with a face value of EUR1.52, was designed and engraved by Pierre Bara.

Since November 1999, and still free of charge, the reproduction and distribution of this stamp are strongly encouraged.
