On that July 19th, the working people did not wait for the government's 
reaction. In Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Gijón, San Sebastián, 
Santander, and in every corner where reaction reared its head, the 
workers, armed with whatever they could find, mindful of decades of 
exploitation and determined not to kneel, took to the streets to 
forcefully defeat the coup-plotting fascist army. In a few hours, the 
sedition was crushed by the popular will in those places.

That military victory was not an end, but a beginning. The defeat of 
fascism in the streets flung open the doors to social revolution. The 
anti-fascist militias, forged in the neighborhoods and workplaces, were 
a manifestation of the people in arms. Factories, fields, workshops, and 
services came to be managed by their own productive workforces. The 
agricultural and industrial collectivizations demonstrated that it is 
possible to organize life without coercion: without bosses, without the 
State, and without leaders. Libertarian communism was shown to be both 
possible and viable, and unprecedented progress was made in how to 
develop a new revolutionary society.

This prodigy of organization and audacity was no accident. It was made 
possible by decades of resistance, militant training, a culture of 
direct action, and widespread, shared rebellion. It was made possible, 
most especially, by the tenacity, success, and sacrifice of the National 
Confederation of Labor (CNT) and the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI). 
It was made possible by years and years of patient revolutionary 
preparation, through committees and confederal bodies that carried out 
commendable, albeit often unseen, grassroots work. They, their 
militants, through their example, bequeathed to us irrefutable proof 
that the working class, when it acts on its own and without tutelage, is 
capable of governing its own destiny and building a new order upon the 
ruins of the old.

Today, 90 years after those days, the world is once again ravaged by the 
rise of fascism, by imperialist wars, by the precarity imposed by 
criminal capitalism, and by states that criminalize all workers' 
struggles and popular resistance. We are not here to pay empty homage to 
a distant past. We reaffirm the enduring relevance of the lessons of 
July 19th: without a workers' and people's power well-armed with 
consciousness and organization, there is no possible defeat of capital; 
without the courage to make the revolution the moment the opportunity 
arises, victories rot away in pacts, concessions, and negotiations that 
will eventually become defeats.

For all these reasons, the undersigned organizations call upon today's 
working class, youth, and all revolutionary tendencies to honor July 
19th not with words, but with deeds. Let us transform memory into 
activism. Let us wield our tools: self-management, mutual support, 
solidarity, and grassroots organizing. Let us never allow anyone, 
through any institutional means, to steal our right to take our lives 
into our own hands.

On the 90th anniversary of July 19, 1936, we shout with the same force 
as then:

Long live the social revolution!

Long live libertarian communism!

Long live all the people and organizations that fought steadfastly for 
the Revolution!

No forgetting, no forgiving criminal fascism!

The land for those who work it, the factory for those who produce!
