Anarchism and War and Peace. From Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Leo Tolstoy
to the End of the Pax Americana ---- Pierre-Joseph Proudhon argues that
we have every reason "to distinguish between the primary cause of war
and its secondary motives or causes, the latter being purely political
in nature, the former purely economic." Without economic imbalance and
pauperization, war would be impossible. Therefore, it is not caused by
human nature or the will of the gods, as many contemporary writers would
have it.
Tolstoy does not deny that people participating in war have a certain
agency. Much depends, he writes, on whether a single corporal refuses or
not to refuse service, and if there are more of them, thousands of
corporals and soldiers, war may become impossible. In his article "The
Inevitable Revolution," Tolstoy writes, however, that this does not mean
that individuals are to blame for instigating conflict. This lies in the
organization of social life, which is based on violence.
Despite the strong influence of Tolstoy and Proudhon, the anarchist
movement, drawing on their intellectual achievements, among other
things, never developed a coherent position on war, and the disputes
within it often resembled those taking place today in connection with
the current armed conflict in Ukraine...
