(en) Brazil, OSL: Education workers in Belo Horizonte approve continuation of strike. Full support for the mobilization! (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 2 Aug 2026 08:08:02 +0300

Workers in the municipal education network of Belo Horizonte have been on strike since April 27th. They denounce a veritable "blackout" in the functioning of schools and the network as a whole. In the largest assembly since the beginning of the movement, this Thursday, the 14th, the category decided to continue the strike. --- The Belo Horizonte Education Secretariat has been in crisis for quite some time. The previous secretary, Bruno Barral, is under investigation for embezzlement of funds in the Salvador Education Secretariat, a fact that motivated his removal, by order of the Supreme Federal Court, from the position in the capital of Minas Gerais.

The Sind-Rede/BH, the union representing the category, denounces the lack of teachers in early childhood education and elementary school, in addition to the poor quality of teaching materials and school uniforms.

The most glaring situation is the dismantling of the full-time early childhood education program, offered to children up to five years of age, which relies on the work of teachers with adequate professional training, hired through competitive examinations and holding their positions. The Secretary of Education, Nathalia Araujo, has been undermining this stage of school education by establishing a model of shifts and after-school programs, which involves hiring people without adequate training and without public competition, through public-private partnerships. This represents a process of outsourcing the service, with the transfer of public funds to civil society organizations. These CSOs are mostly philanthropic entities of a Christian religious nature and with extensive involvement with city councilors and far-right political parties.

All these actions by Mayor Alvaro Damião (União Brasil) and Secretary Nathalia Araujo led the category to another strike and also to mobilize around the need to establish a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Education, whose main objective is to discover the real destination of public money.

The strike is not just a right, it has become a necessity for workers and the entire population. It becomes an example for all of Brazil in the fight against the precariousness and privatization of public education.

Involved in the struggle from the beginning, the OSL (Libertarian Socialist Organization) stands shoulder to shoulder in support of this battle!

ALL STRENGTH TO THE STRIKE IN BELO HORIZONTE EDUCATION!

FOR SELF-MANAGED POPULAR POWER!
