(en) Greece, APO, Land & Freedom - APO's introductory statement on the war (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Introductory statement of the Anarchist Political Organization
(Federation of Collectives) at the event held on April 4, 2026 at the
Lelas Karagianni Squat 37 (Athens) in the context of hosting the 13th
Congress of the International of Anarchist Federations, entitled "The
position of anarchists towards military conflicts and the threat of
generalization of war". ---- AGAINST MODERN INTEGRATION, WAR AND FASCISM
---- ORGANIZATION - INTERNATIONALISM - SOCIAL REVOLUTION ---- The world
of the state and capitalism is bankrupt. It cannot provide answers to
real social needs and has nothing to promise but more misery, poverty,
oppression, cannibalism, war and death: The absolute rule of the law of
the jungle, of the might of the strongest.
The disintegration and complete bankruptcy of the world of the state and
capitalism constitutes a limit to the era of its global integration and
at the same time the cause of the intensification of inter-imperialist
contradictions and the consequent increase in the threat of war. The
state-capitalist system carries within itself its contradictions, the
competition between the bourgeois staffs for the best position on the
chessboard for the plunder and distribution of valuable and limited
natural resources, the expansion of their "sphere of influence" is what
makes the sirens of war sound again and again. Because as long as
societies are bound by the so-called "national interest", private profit
and capitalist accumulation, war will be the only way for empires in
conflict. This capitalist law, however, does not at all mean that the
system of oppression is heading towards its own annihilation, through
its dead ends and contradictions if the peoples themselves do not claim
to take fate into their own hands.
This is what is most tragically evident, both in the war massacre in
Ukraine after the Russian army invaded 4 years ago and in the genocide
of the Palestinian people, which is the brutal escalation of the
78-year-old bloody persecution of the Palestinian people from their land
by the state of Israel and its allies.
We are now counting 4 years since the start of the Russian invasion of
Ukraine, as the culmination of the long-standing conflict between the
pro-Russian political and economic elite on the one hand, and the
pro-Western ruling class of Ukraine on the other. Millions of refugees,
thousands of dead soldiers and civilians, rape, devastation, the
devaluation of every concept of life and destruction. The big loser is
none other than the people of Ukraine who continue to experience the
effects of the war, the dismemberment, the transformation of the country
into a chessboard of geopolitical power games between the EU - USA -
Russia and the plunder and sharing of valuable and limited natural
resources.
The genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza writes another page of
barbarity by the state of Israel, with the attempted extermination and
genocide of the Palestinian people for two and a half years through mass
murders of civilians and famine conditions that Israel has imposed on
the Gaza Strip. Today, despite the apparent ceasefire, the Gaza Strip
continues to be under military siege, with shelling of the few remaining
structures serving the displaced, while parts of it remain under
military occupation, as the population faces serious survival issues
with minimal food, water, medical care and no shelter in the middle of
winter. At the same time, Israel launches attacks on Palestinians in the
West Bank, committing murders, arrests, house demolitions, destruction
of olive groves and settlements. The systematic extermination of the
Palestinian people is also reflected in the recent passage by the
Knesset (Israeli parliament) of the "Execution of Prisoners Law", while
more than 350 Palestinian prisoners have already died in prisons before
its passage as a result of torture, medical neglect and systematic abuse.
The increasing aggression of the US with the intervention in Venezuela
and the criminal forcing of the people of Cuba to live under
exterminating conditions without any electricity, as well as the war
that is raging today against Iran, are a result of the crisis of their
global hegemony, the enormous and multiple internal crises and their
need to reassert their control over strategic areas rich in oil,
minerals, water, etc. Within this context, on February 28, the
US-Israeli military operation against Iran was manifested with heavy
bombings with the indirect support of NATO infrastructure, which
continues to this day. The sensitivity of American imperialism and
genocidal Zionism, moreover, became apparent from the very beginning
with the attack on a school and a training center, resulting in the
murder of hundreds of children. Their same sensitivity was manifested in
the bombing of desalination plants, making the situation in Iran even
more suffocating due to the escalating water shortage. We then witnessed
the attack on an oil production plant in Tehran, with the immediate
result that the entire city was covered in toxic gases and substances,
which pose a danger to the people living there. The people of Iran,
after being drowned in blood - once again over the years - by the regime
after the popular uprising that broke out in January 2026, are now faced
with the bombs of Western imperialism, responsible for so many war
operations around the world.
The hypocrisy of the Western regimes exceeds all limits: at the same
time that they cooperate flawlessly with all the monarchical
authoritarian & theocratic regimes of the Middle East, such as Saudi
Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, etc., they use the regime of the Islamic
Republic in Iran as a tool to invest their crimes with a supposedly
"liberating hue", with the most notable being the cold-blooded murder of
over 180 children in bombings. They thus continue their godly work as
they began in the modern period with the bombings of Belgrade in 1999,
with the war in Iraq in 2003 that destroyed the country, the twenty-year
occupation of Afghanistan that left behind a renewed and strengthened
Taliban regime, the surrender of Syria to the camouflaged ISIS, and the
complete disintegration of Libya after the overthrow of Gaddafi, which
was plunged into perpetual civil wars.
The victims of imperialist predatory and neo-colonial wars and
interventions are always the peoples themselves, who are slaughtered in
this global slaughterhouse or take the path of migration to find death
at the land and water borders of Europe with the murderous assistance of
the Greek state. It would also be naive to believe that the slaughterer
of the Palestinian people, Israel, would care about the lives of
Iranians, when for two and a half years it has been committing genocide
in the Gaza Strip, while at the same time trying to dominate the Middle
East with the aim of completely transforming the region. At the same
time, Israel's murderous war machine is sharpening its aggression,
expanding its strikes to southern Lebanon. From the multi-day airstrikes
on Beirut, the ground invasion and the phosphorus bombs in southern
Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,200 people and the
displacement of approximately 500,000.
Today, on a global level, we are in the midst of a historical phase of
continuous restructuring, accelerating events and intensifying
antagonisms, which mark a violent transition towards a new historical
period. The pre-existing regime, already in disintegration, now reveals
without pretense the deep decay of the systems of power, as each
individual formation of global sovereignty - state, transnational,
economic - is in crisis, trying to preserve its blood-stained gains
through the intensification of repression, the escalation of war and the
intensification of exploitation.
In the dominant discourse of international politics, the "multipolar
world" often appears as a more balanced and therefore more just form of
global organization and hierarchy of states, as a new condition of
equilibrium. From the perspective of the oppressed, from below and
therefore also of Anarchists, the term does not describe a
decentralization of powers for the benefit of societies, but a
rearrangement of the very hierarchy of states and capitalist elites that
are in a line of conflict. A multipolar system means that global power
is distributed among many poles. USA, China, Russia, European Union,
Israel, India, Iran and other regional powers, none of which can any
longer impose the rules of the game on its own. So it is not about less
power or some retreat of the power blocs, nor about a fairer
distribution of power. It is about competition between more rulers who
claim a place at the same table of exploitation.
The key features in such historical periods are multiple poles of power,
asymmetrical forms of power, dynamic shifts in balances, the challenge
of traditional notions of dominance, and all of this takes on a
different meaning when viewed through the class lens of those from
below. For movements and peoples, these poles are not neutral centers of
influence but mechanisms of enforcement and war machines, economic
empires, technological surveillance systems, borders, and camps. Each
power promises protection and development, demanding in return
discipline, markets, natural resources, and cheap labor.
The present historical juncture is characterized by a double and
seemingly contradictory movement: on the one hand, the attempt to
transition to a multipolar world without a stable hegemonic center, on
the other, the generalization of authoritarian, fascist and totalitarian
forms of government. These two movements do not contradict each other.
On the contrary, the second is a condition for stabilizing the first.
Multipolarity, as has been said many times, does not generate peace, but
generalized antagonism, and this antagonism requires societies that are
disciplined, fearful and ready to accept sacrifice as normality. It must
be understood that today's "monarchy" is not simply expressed by the
hegemonic presence of the political-military system that defends the
Western bloc, led by the USA and Israel; today's monoarchy that forcibly
unifies the planet is manifested through global capitalist integration,
which expresses in different geographies the same unified logic of
capitalist exploitation and state oppression, incorporating into it
different cultural, religious and local specificities. It is possible
that on the basis of these specificities the warring blocs seek their
ideological identity, in the face of the dominant Western paradigm,
however this does not in any way mean overcoming or challenging at any
level the unified state-capitalist mechanism of power, exploitation and
oppression.
Fascism is no longer manifested as a mass movement with a unified
ideology, but as an everyday administrative practice. Borders that kill,
police forces that function as an army of occupation, regimes of
exception that become permanent, criminalization of poverty, migration
and solidarity. In this context, the concept of necropolitics no longer
concerns only zones of violence, but the overall organization of the
world. Power does not simply manage life; it actively organizes death,
either directly or indirectly, through famines, sanctions, economic
embargoes, exclusions and permanent precariousness. Death ceases to be a
failure of the politics of the period of development of the fat cows of
capitalist prosperity and becomes a tool for overcoming critical conditions.

Greece, as a member of the European Union and NATO, is firmly oriented
towards the pursuits of the dominant political and economic elite of
which it is an integral part and is tied to the chariot of
Euro-Atlanticism, responsible for so many warlike and military
interventions in recent years and beyond. The continuous energy and
defense cooperation agreements between Greece and the United States
constitute yet another example of the ratification and expansion of
relations between the Greek and American states, confirmation of the
attachment of the domestic bourgeoisie to the chariot of interests of
the dominant international political and economic elite and
strengthening of the role of the Greek state in the crucial region of
the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. It is precisely this
strengthening of the role of the Greek state, which today passes through
the undivided and all-round support of the US and the state of Israel,
that makes the entire Greek territory the rearguard of the front line of
Western imperialism in the Middle East.
In particular, the American base of Souda operates as a critical center
for military monitoring, coordination and support of American and
Euro-Atlantic operations throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle
East. The upgrading and expansion of its capabilities is directly linked
to military actions in the Middle East, including direct and indirect
support for the Israeli state and its participation in the genocide of
the Palestinian people. This base symbolizes and serves the maintenance
of American and Euro-Atlantic sovereignty and guardianship in the
critical region of the Eastern Mediterranean, providing military
capabilities for rapid reaction and handling of its geopolitical
interests. Every ship that sets sail, every aircraft that takes off,
every order issued from the Souda base offers services to the death
machine that slaughters the peoples of the Middle East. In this context,
the Greek state sends warships and planes to Cyprus, pretending that it
is for aid and defensive purposes to prevent an attack. In reality,
however, the Greek state involves the country more and more deeply in
the war, first to defend the British military base at the Paphos cape,
while then sending anti-aircraft systems to Karpathos for the defense of
the American base at Souda, its frigates were and continue to be off the
coast of Israel for its defense and the transfer of information via
military radars regarding imminent strikes on NATO and American-Israeli
targets, and Greek Patriots were used to intercept Iranian ballistic
missiles that targeted an oil company in Saudi Arabia. At the same time,
Greek shipping capital, in its attempt to increase its profits, forces
the crews of its oil tankers to risk their lives to pass through the
Strait of Hormuz.
The Greek state, as the border guard of Europe-Fortress, has over time
followed and expressed in the most emphatically the anti-immigration
policy of the EU. The murderous policies of "deterrence" are reflected
in the thousands of dead refugees at land and water borders, in those
trapped in modern concentration camps and in those imprisoned under a
special racist regime of exception. The "walls" that are erected, such
as the fence on the Evros, do not only serve to keep "surplus
populations" out, but also to lead Western societies to entrench fascism
within them, creating a social condition of fear and hatred.

Today we are going through a period of distortion of meanings and values
and the need for the anarchist movement to be able to establish its
political, value and ideological framework is even more intense, both
for the inoculation of the consciousnesses of those below and for the
defense of its positions against the attempts to impose foreign
perceptions regarding the anarchist struggle and internationalist
solidarity. Perceptions that are based on authoritarian and
authoritarian tendencies, basically of the left, through the support of
totalitarian state formations, condemnation of popular uprisings,
camping in power blocs, consciously false bipolars, emotional blackmail,
slander of fighters and threats, ostensibly dressed in the cloak of
anti-imperialism.
Within this landscape, a dangerous delusion also emerges: that it is
enough to fight against an imperialism to be anti-imperialist. That the
conflict with the West, with the USA, is enough for any other state
power to be baptized "progressive". This logic is not anti-imperialism.
It is a choice of camp. It is a disguise of submission to "realism". No
anti-imperialism is real when it fights against only one imperialist
bloc and allies itself - directly or indirectly - with the rest of the
emerging ones. Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, are not "anti-systemic
exceptions". They are states with their own armies, prisons, borders,
repression, exploitation. Calling themselves "anti-imperialist" because
they are clashing with a stronger and more competitive opponent than in
the period of the monarchy and now asking for a new Yalta, simply means
that one imperialism is seeking legitimacy to replace another.
The logic of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" always leads to the
same dead end. Silence about the crimes of the new and opportunistic
ally, justification of its violence, underestimation of the struggles it
suppresses within itself. Thus, anti-imperialism is transformed into a
geopolitical tool and loses all liberating content and analytical substance.
From an anarchist point of view, this is inconceivable. There is no
imperialism without a state. There is no imperialism without internal
oppression. The same structures that expand outwards, discipline
inwardly, within class-stratified societies, are the same mechanisms
that bomb, imprison, torture and exterminate, and anyone who pretends
not to see this is not practicing anti-imperialism, but is practicing
political cover-up.
Real anti-imperialism does not choose states, flags or poles through
opportunistic alliances, without this meaning that it will not use
internal contradictions and cracks in the system; it chooses sides in
social struggles: It stands with the workers, with the refugees crushed
at the borders, with the conscripts and deserters, the prisoners, the
insurgents, with all those who pay the cost of imperialist antagonisms,
wherever they are. It does not pass through foreign ministries, nor
through geopolitical calculations. It passes through internationalist
solidarity from below.
In a world where new regional or even central powers are emerging, the
stakes are not to choose the "right" or "oppositional" imperialism. It
is to refuse them all. Let us not call the rearrangement of power
liberation. Let us not confuse the crack in the monarchy with a rupture
with the system. The rupture with the system is when we strengthen these
cracks, make them deeper and more rebellious, our position is clear:
against every pole, against every state, against every war of the
bosses. With those from below, without camps, without illusions. This is
the only anti-imperialism that does not betray itself.
States and ruling elites are redistributing the world and the darkest
thing that human history has ever produced is emerging. War and fascism,
as the most depraved expressions of state and capitalist imposition,
constitute a reality that threatens societies all over the world. The
class, social, internationalist solidarity barricades and the
popular/social resistances and uprisings of the plebeians all over the
world constitute humanity's only hope for the overthrow of the dominant
destructive plans and for the building of a new society of equality,
solidarity and freedom.
For our part, based on our principles and values as organized
anarchists, we intervene and act in the fields of social and class
struggle, aiming at class and social emancipation against every form of
tyranny and not at serving one or the other tyrannical regime, state or
transnational camp. We stand in solidarity, on the side of every people
who fight for survival, dignity, land and freedom against the global
dictatorship of the state and capitalism, colonialism and imperialism.
We draw inspiration from the struggling people throughout the world who,
faced with the monster of fascism and state and capitalist barbarity,
rebel, strike, demonstrate, clash with the police. These are the
elements of the struggle that we want to highlight as anarchists, the
ability of the conquered to counterattack the all-powerful conqueror,
the ability of the poor and the excluded to rebel even under the most
barbaric conditions. We want international solidarity to create rifts
within the attacking sovereigns by bringing to the fore our own history,
the history of the struggles of those from below that, against all
times, create the living reality of freedom and solidarity, constituting
the only real bulwark against the onslaught of modern totalitarianism.
Until the total liberation of the peoples from the shackles of the state
and capital, until the Social Revolution for a world of equality,
solidarity and freedom.
On this basis, we address our appeal from the Greek space to the
international anarchist movement. On the one hand, the very dynamics of
the changes and upheavals sought by the dominant forces require the
rapid reconstruction of the current at an international level, the
urgent need to expand the network of contacts and communication of
anarchists at an international level is proven de facto, with the main
goal of exchanging experiences, informing about how authoritarian
politics is shaped in each geography but also the social resistances
that manifest themselves in every part of the planet. In addition, the
discussion at an international level regarding the war treaty and the
generalized war threat is decisive. It is literally a matter of life and
death for the movement, as well as for the societies and the oppressed,
to be able to form and adopt the most coherent possible stance of
anarchists towards militarism, the threat of war and resistance to
global domination. We believe that this can be achieved if comrades in
every geography manage to realize that while there are visible
historical, political, social or even cultural differences between the
individual societies (and therefore movements) that are necessarily
constituted under the shadow of the nation-state, which must be
respected, at the same time today's anarchist analysis establishes a
single state and capitalist condition that hegemonizes and oppresses the
entire planet. We must oppose this condition unitedly, whether it is
expressed through the warmongering hegemonic Western coalition of the
USA-NATO-ISRAEL or through the belligerent Russian authoritarianism, the
oppressive Muslim obscurantism and the bureaucratic Chinese state
totalitarianism.
The deepening of the relevant discussion and the corresponding
cooperation of anarchists at the international level are basic
prerequisites for the strengthening of the anarchist struggle, that is,
the strengthening of the social and class resistances themselves that
can protect societies from the threat of war and the intensification of
exploitation and oppression.
