Le Monde libertaire in retrospect. The editorial board of your favorite
newspaper offers you a brief look back, fifty-four years ago, at the
editorial line and choices made by its predecessors. A position we find
compelling and are committed to defending for the duration of our term.
---- Le Monde libertaire is not the mouthpiece of a party, but the
crucible where divergent opinions, all claiming to be anarchist, clash.
It is not a place to seek an official dogma. ---- In this issue, for
example, you will find articles that are individualistic, anarchist, and
anti-individualist, as well as articles that oppose unionism and
articles that assert that unionism is a necessity. It is up to the
reader, considered not as an underdeveloped individual but as a
responsible person, to choose between these opposing perspectives, or
even to draw from each to create their own synthesis.
If certain bylines appear frequently in these pages, this stems solely
from the journalistic vitality of their authors. Neither Le Monde
libertaire nor the Fédération anarchiste endorses any particular
personalities or privileges any specific theories. Le Monde libertaire
is not the newspaper of one person; it must become the newspaper of all.
Some will say there is a lack of coherence at the level of the
Fédération anarchiste, and therefore of its newspaper. Coherence
consists of the absence of authority over others and thus respect for
differing libertarian ideas. At the level of the autonomous groups and
individuals that make up the Fédération anarchiste, coherence must go
much further and lead to radical practices in accordance with the
initial principles. At this level, nothing prevents strict organizations
or precise agreements.
Anarchism is not a fixed and rigid system, but a continuous ferment.
Like the scientific method, it can only evolve through constant questioning.
