(en) UK, ACG: ACG Online Public Meeting Heralds of Hope: Revolts around the World - 7pm, January 12th, 2026 (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Wed, 28 Jan 2026 07:27:07 +0200

In 2025, a wave of struggle, swept around the world. Sometimes referred to as the Gen Z Revolution, revolts driven by disgust over corruption and nepotism, restrictions on social media, high youth unemployment, repression, mistrust of government, concern over the climate and the widening gap between the rich and the poor, triggered revolts in Nepal, Indonesia, Madagascar, Morocco, Peru, and Kenya. ---- These revolts were characterised by decentralised and leaderless organisation, via digital platforms.
In addition to this , there were revolts in Togo, Timor-Leste, Paraguay, and Mongolia. There was an ongoing movement against the government in Serbia. There were strikes and demonstrations by workers, pensioners and students against the theocratic regime in Iran. There were massive general strikes in Belgium, Greece, Portugal and Italy, with resistance to austerity being increasingly linked to resistance to war fever and militarisation. In Germany school students and university students came out on the streets to protest against the war plans of the government and the threat of conscription. There were also massive strike movements in France, and huge demonstrations and blockades against the austerity plans of the government.

Even here in Britain, workers have increasingly taken strike action-bin workers, TEFL teachers, museum and gallery staff, cleaners, tube workers and bus drivers, hospitality workers, oil refinery workers, university lecturers, oil refinery workers, and doctors.

This meeting takes a look at what unites all of these struggles, and what is holding them back. We contrast these struggles, heralds of hope, against the deteriorating political and economic situation, the drive to war, the rise of fascism and far right populism, the climate crisis, and the mainstream media's message of pessimism and resignation.
