MONFALCONE, a city that has struggled for years with some of the lowest
socioeconomic indicators in the region, a city that has already
swallowed more concrete and land use than anyone in their right mind
would consider normal, has once again decided its number one priority:
Give guns to the local police.
Brilliant. Truly.
While neighborhoods demand services, space, housing, and welfare, the
city council's response is always the same:
more control, more bans, more "decorum," more security.
From ordinances regulating life in parks, to blanket patrols that turn
streets into checkpoints, to measures that peddle "order" instead of
addressing real problems.
And now guns, too.
For a city that needs jobs, health, air, a future,
not brand-new holsters.
We're not falling for it.
The pattern is clear:
- social problems increasing?
- repression.
- Is land consumption devouring everything?
- Silence.
- Is the city sliding into poverty?
- Is it someone else's fault?
- Are we asking for more listening?
- Sirens, flashing lights, closed doors.
But we weren't born yesterday.
We know that true security isn't built with a weapon,
but with decent homes, public services, living spaces, and breathing
neighborhoods.
We know that concrete can't be eaten and that fear is just another form
of control.
MONFALCONE DOESN'T NEED AN ARMED CITY.
IT NEEDS A CITY THAT STARTS LIVING AGAIN.
At Caffè Esperanto we continue to meet, discuss, and organize.
For a city that doesn't kneel before the truncheon of the security
imagination.
