Hi all,
As you may or may not know, most of the women who were arrested at the anti-APEC protest at UBC on November 25 were strip-searched. The men were not. The police actually searched the body cavities of a couple women. This is outrageous. It is apparent that these are serious human rights abuses, and perhaps were done with the purpose of intimidating women from political action in addition to being just vile manifestations of the digusting way women are treated in our country and all over the world.
Regrettably, it has taken us some time to react to these facts and some of the women from APEC-Alert are now organizing a response, (as well as trying to understand why it took us so long, and so much more). We think it's really important to let everyone know what happened. These abuses stem from the conditions in which we all live. Once our outrage is expressed it can been taken up by others and together we can do something about it. We would like to get together with women in early January to talk about how these experiences with the police effect us and what to do about it:
First meeting: Friday, January 2 5:00 p.m. La Quena, 1111 Commercial Drive
Second meeting: Thursday, January 8 7:00 p.m. La Quena
Recently in Guelph, police also treated women activists atrociously. We would like our action to be in solidarity with the women in Guelph and others. We will not be intimidated into submission: we will continue to exercise our supposed freedoms and will not accept being strip searched or otherwise violated as a result.
If you want to get involved with our action in Vancouver or to plan a solidarity action elsewhere, e-mail us at cronauer@cs.ubc.ca or call Kendra at(604)872-1529 or Nicole at (604)215-0606.
See you all at the action in January. More details to come.....
