How many readers out there are aware that our children are exposed every day to the most crass and exploitative of television programing through the largest television network in the United States, and--further--that they are subjected to this brainwashing in school?
TV-1 offers free television monitors for every classroom, so long as the school allows the network to broadcast a mornings news digest at the beginning of each school day. News reporting is of course biased toward capitalism--biased to the point where I would call it active propaganda. Our children are presented with only the stories which capital wants them to hear, and are shown only the side of that story which favors capitalism and authoritarian democracy. All of this in little four minute segments sandwiched between the most blatant of commercial appeals. Wonder why a bomb like Disney's remake of "flubber" was the top grosser in its first week of release? The answer is that Disney advertised heavily on TV-1, taking advantage of what is literally a captive audience.
And what does TV-1 intend to do with its substantial profits? Word has it that they will open a chain of private schools all across the US. They might even serve a little math and English with the happy meals.
How can we ever teach our children to think for themselves when they are subjected to garbage like this at school? And what of those who have banned television from the home only to have their children exposed to it at school? We need to develop some Adbuster tactics to deal with this insidious menace.
