Friends, You will no doubt be interested to know that resolutions against the MAI were passed at the just concluded Ontario Federation of Labour Convention and that everyone who took part is clearly very concerned about it. It was also dealt with in a speech to the convention by David Orchard and his group had a display table present throughout the proceedings. Nonetheless, I neither heard nor saw anything that indicates we are about to see organized labour embark on a major campaign against the MAI. The ball is in the court of the Canadian Labour Congress and it is not providing me with any reason for optimism. It's a sad state of affairs when the labour movement in this country needs a swift kick in the ass in order to get moving on this issue.

"Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle! Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress." --Frederick Douglass, August 4, 1857.
Don't expect to hear any "opposition" from the Opposition in Ottawa. Preston Manning is as much a part of the Privatization Scheme being foisted upon an unsuspecting public, as is Chr=E9tien, and Charest.
Amazing how different all the mainstream political parties are in this country. As of this moment there is still only ONE Federal party which stands against these totalitarian specimens of inhumanity.
It won't be long before THEIR BUDDIES own the whole country and we will have paid them to take it from us. Now isn't that ironic !
These guys are relentless and so must we !

Re: Urgent: Pensions Action on December 4th.
Friends,
The pension issue has come to a head, and the Council is endeavoring to organize as many actions as possible to coincide on December 4th to highlight the following issues:
The C.P.P. is being privatized, and $40,000,000,000 will be handed to the banks and stock brokers to invest in the unpredictable (and unethical) stock market.
The so-called Senior's Benefit legislation will be introduced early in the new year - furthering the Federal Government's plan to undermine universality and cut social programs.
The banks are announcing yet another year of record profits, while social programs continue to be slashed and poverty skyrockets.
Here is the plan:
Rallies are planned for December 4th in Vancouver, Winnepeg, Toronto, Ottawa (with maybe others, depending on local group capacity). December 4th is the day CIBC will announce record-breaking profits, capping a week of similar announcements by Canada's banks.
These rallies have been endorsed by the Canadian Labour Congress, and an emergency resolution to the B.C. Federation of Labour's policy convention held the same day will be introduced.
The Council of Canadians will have a new brochure ready for distribution, and will have an up-to-date 2 page fact sheet to be used as speaking notes.
In Vancouver, we will be holding a noon-hour "press conference" outside of the Vancouver Stock Exchange. We have four speakers, and we will be handing over a giant cheque for $40,000,000,000 to a stock broker (actually - Dallas Collis from the North Shore group).
Apologies for the short notice. It is certainly understandable if the timeline is too short for your group. But please consult with your group if possible over the weekend to see whether you are able to organize something for Thursday, December 4th. I'll be phoning around on Monday.
Good Luck,
Steve
