An historic Vancouver event: Testimonies from East Timorese and Indonesian exiles and a trial of General Suharto for crimes against humanity.

Thirteen East Timorese will present testimony about the genocide in East Timor. Joined by prominent Indonesian supporters, their compelling evidence will form the basis of a judgment by a citizen's jury on General Suharto, President of Indonesia. Suharto is the man who is ultimately responsible for massive human rights abuses in East Timor and Indonesia. He will be welcomed to Canada and UBC as part of the APEC Summit.

PROGRAMME:

10am to 12:30pm -- East Timor: Past and Present

Testimonies from East Timorese in-exile about human rights abuses they have witnessed or suffered. Includes remarks by George Aditjondro, Indonesian environmentalist, and Svend Robinson, MP.

12:30pm to 2:30pm -- Film Showings

"Bitter Paradise," about Canada's role in the East Timorese genocide, and a recently released film about 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Carlos Belo, Bishop of East Timor.

2:30pm to 4:00pm -- East Timor: The Future

East Timorese and Indonesians discuss the future of East Timor and a peaceful end to over two decades of occupation.

4:00pm to 4:30pm -- The Verdict

A jury of 12 citizens will render their judgment as to whether General Suharto should be tried for crimes against humanity.
