POVERTY IN THE LAND OF ECONOMIC MIRACLES:=20 URBAN POOR ISSUES IN SEOUL, KOREA AND NEW YORK CITY
The Korea Exposure & Education Program (KEEP) and NYU's Asian/Pacific/American Studies Institute will be sponsoring a community forum that includes a video presentation and panel discussion entitled "Poverty in the Land of Economic Miracles: Urban Poor Issues in Seoul, Korea and New York City." This event is open to the public.

In this period of global economic restructuring, so called "economic miracles" have benefited the few at the expense of the many. Current international economic policies have created a growing inequality between the rich and the poor and pushed increasing numbers of people into poverty. In metropolitan areas of the world's major cities, the urban poor face increasingly harsher living conditions and greater repression. In the video, "The People of HaengDangDong," produced by PURN Productions, urban poor people of one Seoul, Korea community fight for their homes and their dignity in the face of violent eviction. =20 The discussion that follows the video presentation will focus specifically on the organizing work of those in the struggle to improve the lives of the urban poor in Korea and the United States. Panelists from New York City community-based organizations will speak about current issues, struggles and victories of urban poor people to live as human beings. Speakers include: Nia Mason, Director of Action for Community Empowerment, Eric Tang, Program Coordinator for the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence, Sandy White, Fifth Avenue Committee, and Jonathon Kim HyoSung Bidol, East Coast Coordinator for KEEP. =20 The mission of the Korea Exposure & Education Program (KEEP) is to increase awareness of and strengthen the global movement for peace and justice on the Korean peninsula. Through building relationships and communities, KEEP seeks to broaden its understanding of and participation in the liberation struggles and reunification of the Korean people. KEEP was founded in 1994 to educate and expose activists in the United States to the struggles of people fighting for social justice in south Korea. This community forum is part of KEEP=92s work to build and strengthen movements for peace, reunification, social, economic, and political justice.
