Three students arrested at UBC in APEC protest
by Marina Jimenez Vancouver Sun
RCMP arrested three University of British Columbia students Friday afternoon for writing anti-APEC messages in washable marker on the windows of the university president's newly renovated atrium.
Students Jonathan Oppenheim, 26, Caleb Sigurgeirson, 26, and Victoria Scott, 26, were part of a protest that took on a Halloween theme outside president Martha Piper's home on campus.
RCMP Staff Sergeant Lloyd Plante said all three students will be charged with mischief. Sigurgeirson was released but Oppenheim and Scott were detained overnight.
"We have concern there would be a continuation of the offence," said Plante, "They were on private property."
Student protester Shiraz Dindar said police were trying to intimidate students, "They were violently frisked and removed from campus," said Dindar, 25. "It was a clear act of intimidation."
He accused police of attempting to avoid media scrutiny by arresting students after Friday's protest when there was no media present.
He noted that there were no arrests during Wednesday's APEC protest outside the president's house, when a host of television cameras and media were present.
Dindar and six of the 30 protesters had chosen to mark the windows with messages such as "Say Boo to APEC", but only three students were arrested. "Police told us that no evidence was collected on the other students," he said.
Dindar said the messages could easily be wiped away with a wet cloth.
Students chose to deface the atrium because that is where Piper is scheduled to greet APEC leaders.
