Hi -
the following is to invite you to join a new mailing list: ARTERY - for arts, community, and activism. I'm initiating this to keep in touch with friends and promote dialogue between the artist and activist communities.
The list is new, so it's open to growth and development from your input. Judging from the response so far, I think it's going to be a hot list. Please pass this info on to any interested parties.
To subscribe, follow the directions below.
take care,

ARTERY - Community Arts For Social Change
Welcome to the ARTERY - a networking forum for community-based artists to share news, ideas and strategies about their activist work in community.
This lightly-moderated mailing list will serve as a resource and inspiration for artists concerned with integrating an activist consciousness into their work; who use art as a transformative medium for justice and social change, and work to create collective mythologies that embrace visions of our possible futures.
Community art is not specialized technology for a consumer elite. Accessibility to the work, inclusive of the family and non-professional, will be seen as key.
This will be a place where artists who have been influenced by the work of such companies as Welfare State, Bread and Puppet, and Boal's Theatre of The Oppressed can dialogue about their activities around the globe.
Discussion may range from the aesthetic to the practical - and focus on such topics as:
- what's effective for stimulating social change? - ethical responsibility as an artist - positive vs. negative impacts of image-making - choosing the mainstream or marginality? - techniques from commedia, popular education, street theatre, etc. - designing work for demonstrations and direct action - creating rituals and ceremonies - scripts, proposals, and how-to build this and that - infiltrating the popular media - grassroots mobilizing of volunteers - the problems of sponsorship and funding - and especially, sustaining and motivating yourself as a community-based artist.
This can be a supportive resting place to evaluate our successes and failures, to stimulate our collective poetics of community-building, and disseminate ideas and energy for non-violent, creative protest. Although my background is in theatre, the list is not exclusively for performance-based arts. All celebration artists, culture-jammers, giant puppeteers, shamans and fire-dancers, fools and pranksters, horn-blowers and tree-huggers welcome.
