TALK TO HYUNDAI!!!

The response to the call for leafleting at Hyundai dealerships has been amazing!!! More than 25 cities will have leafleting actions on October 25. THANKS to all of you who have scrambled on short notice to organize a leafleting event on one or both of the national days of action (October 25 and November 1).

With your continuing support, we can convince Hyundai that it will be much more affordable to do right by the workers at the Han Young maquiladora than to endure a prolongued boycott of Hyundai Motors. (Han Young is a feeder factory producing chassis for the Hyundai tractor-trailer factory, also near Tijuana. Under Mexican law, Hyundai is responsible for violations of the labor code by its contractor because the latter produces exclusively for Hyundai.)

In addition to participating in the leafleting actions, here are some other activities which would be helpful:

* Look up your local Hyundai dealerships in the phone book and give them a call.

* Visit Hyundai's web site at www.hmaservice.com and click on "Talk to Hyundai."

Talking points:

* Respect the Han Young workers' right to have the union of their choice: STIMAHCS. This is the core issue in this struggle. On October 5, workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of being represented by the independent STIMAHCS union. However, the corrupt elections board - in collusion with Hyundai - refuses to certify the results of the election.

* No more illegal firings. At least 12 pro-union workers have been fired so far. Although the illegal firings have stopped temporarily, Han Young management have made clear their intention to replace the entire pro-union workforce.

* Reinstate workers who were illegally fired for their union activities.

* Activists are preparing "Boycott Hyundai" bumper stickers. These will be printed on vinyl so that they will last for a LONG time. Do Hyundai Motors salespeople want to be reading these bumper stickers everywhere they drive for the next five years?

The Hyundai action packet is available (in hard copy only, so far) from Campaign for Labor Rights. Donations are requested, to cover printing and mailing costs. Anything extra will go to the Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers, which maintains a support fund.

Please let us know if you plan a leafleting action at a Hyundai dealership.

For an action packet or for more information, contact Campaign for Labor Rights: CLR@igc.apc.org or (541) 344-5410. The Support Committee for Maquiladora workers has asked that you NOT contact their office for information. Their staff and volunteers need to devote all of their energies to managing the many aspects of this campaign.

For various technical reasons, many email messages are "bounced back." Our largest lists are now on an automated system which drops any address which malfunctions, even if because of a temporary problem with your email server. Although our alert system is becoming automated, you can still communicate with a real person at Campaign for Labor Rights. Send your messages to <clr@igc.apc.org>.
