Two National Action Days: October 25 and November 1 leafleting at Hyundai dealerships on next two Saturdays
[NOTE: Campaign for Labor Rights considers the Hyundai boycott one of the very highest priorities for anti-sweatshop work at this time.]
The response to the call for leafleting in support of the Hyundai boycott has been tremendous!!! So far, at least 25 cities have planned leafleting for this Saturday, October 25 - on very short notice. Because activists in other cities would like to participate in a coordinated effort but need a little more lead time, the Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers (based in San Diego) has called for a second national day of action on Saturday, November 1.
LABOR SUPPORT:
Organized labor is providing significant support for the Han Young/Hyundai workers. This support is coming in many forms and from many sources, including: the AFL-CIO, the Canadian Labor Congress and the International Metalworkers' Federation -- based in Europe.
We frequently are asked: Has the AFL-CIO endorsed a boycott of Hyundai? Due to anti-union labor law in the United States, unions are barred from overtly calling for secondary boycotts. The fact that unions may be barred from endorsing this boycott should not be taken as a sign that organized labor does not support the Han Young/Hyundai workers and the actions taken on their behalf. Organized labor is providing important backing for this struggle.
FIRINGS HALTED:
The illegal firing of Han Young workers, which was proceeding at the rate of two per day, has halted - at least for now. We can only speculate on the reasons. While this is good news, we should remember that Han Young management clearly stated their intention of firing all of the pro-union workforce. This campaign remains just as urgent as previously.
ACTION PACKETS:
The Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers has put together a Hyundai action packet - available through Campaign for Labor Rights: CLR@igc.apc.org or (541) 344-5410. Please do not contact the Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers for materials or information. Their staff and volunteers have responsibility for maintaining contact with the Han Young (Hyundai) workers, conducting research, setting strategy and many other duties of the campaign. They ask grassroots activists to direct their inquiries and requests for campaign materials to Campaign for Labor Rights.
CHARGES FILED:
Lawyers for the Han Young workers filed a criminal action today against illegitimate workers who committed perjury when they lied about their date of hire during the October 5 union certification election. So far, the Mexican elections board has not issued a finding on the election, in which the clear majority of workers (even taking into account those who voted fraudulently and illegally) opted for the STIMAHCS union, a branch of the independent FAT union.
LOCAL COALITIONS:
We strongly urged local committees to work in coalition on the Hyundai leafleting. This is a great opportunity for community-based organizations and labor bodies to work together.
