(en) Italy, FdCA, IL CANTIERE #39 - The Michel-Ferrer Collective (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Fri, 26 Dec 2025 09:04:02 +0200

A year and a half ago, a group of comrades founded a teachers' and educators' collective dedicated to libertarian pedagogy between Livorno and Pisa. The collective's name is Michel-Ferrer (dedicated to the revolutionaries and educators Louise Michel and Francisco Ferrer y Guardia). The collective, in addition to meeting regularly once a week from September to June, has already produced two newsletters, published by "il cantiere" as supplements.
The chosen title is Yakamoz: a Turkish word meaning "the reflection of the moon on water."
An inspiration for reflections on public schools.
Yakamoz and the Michel-Ferrer Pedagogical Collective are an experience that, while inspired by anarchist-communist principles, remains independent.
A bit of history
The Collective was born about a year ago from the awareness of an initial core group of teachers we met through our joint work with the FLC-CGIL in Pisa and Livorno.
With them, we began to develop an engagement program on concrete teaching issues in schools of all levels, starting with distance learning, bullying, the penetration of militarism into the school system, the condition of buildings and the staff who live and work in various capacities in public schools-namely, teachers, educators, students, auxiliary, technical, and administrative staff, and anyone interested in any way in teaching issues. The reference to libertarian pedagogy was obvious to us, but with some important differences that separate us from the ideological approach typical of contemporary anarchism and beyond, which abstractly resolves itself into anti-authoritarianism, experimentalism, and educationalism. These are concepts that we share, but which cannot be simple testimony. They must be placed within the concrete and collective reality of education, as an instrument of capital and therefore not extraneous to social conflict, to identify its problems, its limits, and its delays. Therefore, our area of intervention is the public school system, as an entity to be defended in order to connect with the subjects that comprise it and, inevitably, with their contradictions, which we confront. We are not interested in creating networks of alternative and antagonistic counterculture, but in raising awareness for a unified intervention in reality. From this perspective, it is also inevitable to consider the trade union dimension, as disputes and contractual agreements determine the quality of education.
In the Collective, some belong to the CGIL (the Italian General Confederation of Labour) in its majority and minority branches, others to Cobas and Unicobas, and others to no trade unions, but discussions are always calm and aimed at identifying unified solutions. The two issues of the Yakamoz Bulletin are the product of this process we are undertaking, which allows for absolutely free participation.

In keeping with this approach, we are pleased to host a reflection by a comrade active in the collective.
