(en) France, UCL Press Release: TDoR: Commemoration is Political! (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sat, 20 Dec 2025 08:47:46 +0200

Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) takes place every year on November 20th. This day commemorates trans people killed by transphobia, murdered, by suicide, or victims of financial and medical insecurity, and highlights the importance of trans struggles. More than ever, in a context of rising fascism, it is necessary to defend the rights of trans people! ---- From October 2024 to September 2025, 281 trans people were murdered, according to the official Trans Murder Monitoring Report. We know this is only the tip of the iceberg; this monitoring is made extremely difficult by the insecurity and isolation experienced by trans people, which render them invisible. Among the victims, 88% are people of color, 90% are women, 34% are sex workers, and 14% are trans rights activists. In an increasingly harsh and transphobic social and political context, trans people are also eight times more likely than cisgender people to attempt suicide in their lifetime.

Between precariousness, racism, and transmysonic discrimination, the voices of trans people and their struggles are silenced. This is a direct consequence of the growing reactionary political agenda that seeks to deny the existence of trans people by stripping them of their rights and dehumanizing them.

Transphobic attacks continue everywhere. From the United States, Trump's fascist policies systematically target trans people: exclusion from sports clubs, denial of self-determination, restrictions on access to healthcare and hormone therapy, and the end of suicide prevention campaigns in the LGBTQ+ community-the list goes on. In the United Kingdom, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a binary view of gender, siding with conservative organizations. In France, while the High Authority for Health affirmed, in its recommendations, the self-determination of transgender people and the need to depathologize healthcare pathways, it bowed to pressure from conservative lobbies by refusing to apply these recommendations to transgender minors. It is also important to remember that subsidies to feminist and LGBTQ+ organizations such as Planned Parenthood are being cut, and resource centers are closing one after another, restricting effective access to necessary healthcare for transgender people.

Billionaires are joining forces to finance these hate campaigns and are thriving in the authoritarian capitalism that is taking hold, particularly in the West. In France, as elsewhere, governments are cutting budgets and public health and education services. This trend toward austerity fosters a resurgence of conservatism, which further marginalizes already vulnerable people. Added to this are moral panics, such as those surrounding the participation of trans people in official sporting competitions.

This current context underscores the crucial importance of supporting trans struggles and reminding everyone that bourgeois and reactionary policies must be fought by the entire social movement. Our trans struggles support the associations, organizations, and unions that fight with and for the rights of trans people! Our trans struggles are antifascist, anticapitalist, antiracist, and feminist!

Our thoughts are with all the trans people killed by transphobia. Every victim is one too many!

Let's fight for a trans feminism!
