(en) France, Lamouette Enragee: Regarding Robert Badinter and the Socialist Party: "From the death penalty to punishment until death" (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Fri, 28 Nov 2025 09:31:07 +0200

In their weekly radio program, our colleagues at L'Égrégore revisit Robert Badinter's entry into the Panthéon and offer a critical perspective on the record of the left in power regarding prison policy. The Socialist Party, now in decline, nevertheless intends to remain in the game; this is the essence of its self-proclaimed role as an auxiliary to Macron's policies. With local elections approaching, the familiar refrain of the broadest possible, and therefore least discerning, unity to block the far right at the ballot box is already being sunganother opportunity for the Socialist Party to polish its image with a left-wing electorate that remains as anxious as it is forgetful.

This radio program thus provides us with the opportunity to recall that, in criminal matters, as in all others, the left's political record has been undeniable. Let's not forget that it was during the Mitterrand years that the far right in France regained an electoral strength that has never waned since.

Under the left, the number of incarcerations literally exploded, rising rapidly from 40,000 prisoners at the end of the 1970s to 60,000 by the beginning of the 1980s, reaching 85,000 today. Throughout this period, the length of sentences has only increased, some becoming irrevocable...

To those who never miss an opportunity to challenge us, deeming criticism of the left sterile and the electoral game unavoidable, we reply, if it still needed demonstrating, that parliamentary categories are illusory and misleading. Rightly so, our comrade reminds us that the only path to emancipation is through the balance of power, whether inside prisons, in businesses, neighborhoods, the streets, or society as a whole!

Note that this program was recorded before Sarkozy's incarceration in the VIP wing.

To further explore this topic, we recommend reading two books by our colleague Nadia Ménenger:
