(en) Brazil, OSL: The Flight of the Green Hens and the Current Importance of Antifascism (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

On October 7, 1934, 91 years ago, the Battle of Praça da Sé took place,
also known as the Flight of the Green Hens. This confrontation took
place between anti-fascists and members of the Brazilian Integralist
Action (AIB)-a fascist party with a theoretical framework inspired by
the ideas of French Integralism and Italian Fascism, seeking to
Brazilianize its traditions, with an armed wing, women's groups, and
publications. The AIB had been on the rise since 1932, the year of its
founding, both in membership and in the level of violence employed
against working-class organizations. It was responsible for doing the
dirty work that the DOPS could not.
In addition to the anti-fascist militancy organized around immigrant
workers, there was also the São Paulo Workers' Federation (FOSP), which,
despite state repression, still had significant anarchist influence.
Alongside PCB activists, and led by the Brazilian Socialist Party (which
had strong ties to Italian anti-fascist militancy) and the Communist
League, the anarchists formed the United Anti-Fascist Front (FUA) in
1933 and organized several demonstrations against Integralist marches
and security committees at working-class organizing sites, such as
unions, newspaper and party headquarters, leisure and cultural venues, etc.
On the day of the two-year anniversary of the Integralist manifesto, the
FUA organized to definitively stop the "Ganho Verdes" (Green Chickens).
The rally was already filling the area around Praça da Sé in downtown
São Paulo, which at the time was a hotbed of political parties, so much
so that the day before, police searched several buildings that were
union offices. While attempting to quell the physical confrontation, the
police fired on one group, and then all armed parties began exchanging
gunfire. The conflict calmed down until a police machine gun went off
accidentally. The incident resulted in seven deaths and around 30
injuries, and the public humiliation of the AIB (Brazilian Workers'
Party), highlighted in the pages of working-class newspapers, such as
Jornal do Povo, which ran the headline: "An Integralist doesn't run: he
flies..."
The resurgence of far-right ideas among a wider audience demonstrates
the need for anti-fascist struggles worldwide. The resurgence of
reactionary ideologies aims to maintain and expand the privileges of the
ruling classes. Racism, xenophobia, nationalism, and misogyny are
expressions of these ideologies, often accompanied by austerity policies
and death.
The anti-fascist struggle remains alive around the world, as long as
fascism persists. In the United States, a territory free for far-right
groups to organize, the Trump administration declared Antifa a terrorist
organization, creating a climate of persecution and fear among those who
wage the anti-fascist struggle daily. An example of this is the exile of
professor and historian Mark Bray, author of "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist
Handbook," who, due to the threats he suffered, moved with his family to
Europe.
Anarchism plays a strong role in denouncing and combating fascism. As
the Battle of Praça da Sé and countless other episodes demonstrate, the
anti-fascist struggle must remain organized and prepared to combat the
far-right, by any means necessary.
Long live the anti-fascist struggle, yesterday, today, and always!
