In my opinion, it's quite pointless, regarding the strike and
demonstration of October 3, to repeat what I've already emphasized about
the extraordinary significance of the mobilization, the involvement of
significant social sectors other than those traditionally influenced
and/or organized by grassroots unionism and the radical left, and the
objective importance of the ongoing issue. ---- All true but I would
rather emphasize three facts: ---- the successful mobilization twice in
such a short time is something that has never happened in a long time
and, in itself, an important sign of the arrival of a new political
generation that is intertwined with the resumption of a tool of struggle
such as the strike, as "traditional" as it is radical in itself;
Above all, the strike and demonstrations succeeded despite the Guarantee
Commission's ruling on the exercise of the right to strike, the
government's threats, and the misinformation aimed at frightening
workers. Indeed, it is extraordinary that the repressive measures
deployed by the current government with the security decree and other
measures have proven ineffective. What was clear to the Ciompi during
their revolt has once again proven true: that is, that the extension of
illegal behavior beyond a certain limit undermines the very claim that
the law being violated still applies. This is, in short, an
extraordinary political step;
The scale of the mobilization that erupted on September 22nd was such
that it prompted Italy's main union, the CGIL, to reverse its stance and
seek a temporary (and, if so, until when?) alliance with grassroots
unionism, specifically with Cobas, CUB, and USB. It's enough to consider
that, during the strike called by CUB and USB for September 22nd, the
CGIL, sensing signs of discontent and a willingness to mobilize among
workers and its members, attempted, with very mediocre results, a solo
strike on September 19th. This time, for the first time since grassroots
unionism began, it agreed to call a general strike with the grassroots
unions themselves. It is now well known that when right-wing governments
prevail, the CGIL moves to the left and has difficulties in its
relations, especially with the CISL, but what happened on October 3rd
was something completely new.
In short, we are facing a new situation that requires collective
reflection and the ability to assume the responsibilities that the
evolving situation places on grassroots unionism and the social opposition.
In my opinion, it's about linking the mobilization in support of the
Gaza population with a targeted initiative against the war economy, the
militarization of society, and the government's attack on rights and
freedoms. There are interesting and important initiatives in these areas
that should be revived and expanded.
At the same time, a strong connection between youth and student
mobilization and that of workers is necessary; the contradiction between
capital and labor and opposition to all imperialisms are in a
physiological relationship.
The same energy released by the strikes of September 22nd and October
3rd, and the myriad initiatives launched during this period, are a
favorable precondition for a resumption of conflict in the workplace
over issues such as wages, precarious work, and welfare. But this
precondition must not be wasted, and not wasting it means imagining and
building a united campaign on these issues.
