(en) France, UCL Press Release - Suspension of pension reform: even two years later, only a strike pays! (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 6 Nov 2025 10:33:48 +0200

On October 14, the Lecornu government negotiated its survival with the Socialist Party (PS) in exchange for delaying the pension counter-reform. We should welcome this partial rollback of Macron's flagship measure of social dismantling, but we are not fooled. Behind this delay, which will positively affect some workers, the austerity budget will hit our entire class, the Social Security system, and our public services hard. The interplay of alliances with the right and the far right in the National Assembly can only raise fears of tougher policies on many issues.

As revolutionaries, we have no faith in parliamentary promises. We know that all reforms are reversible once those in power and the bourgeoisie stop being afraid. We must strategically take advantage of every moment when the balance of power is in our favor to achieve as much as possible and move toward a radical rethinking of the organization of society. This setback for Macron's government is yet another opportunity to push for the repeal of the 2023 reform, followed by retirement at 55 without pensions.

Because this suspension is not a victory for the Socialist Party: it is the victory of our massive mobilization two years ago, in the streets and in our workplaces. A mobilization reinvigorated during the final days of September and October, which imposed retirement and social equality as the central issues for the 2025 school year. No matter how the government presents it, it ultimately gave in to the inter-union demand. This legitimizes the social movement, the effectiveness of strikes, and our methods of action. Even two years later, the anger is still there and scares Macron and the capitalists enough to force them to make concessions.

After this first stage, and just after a massive social resumption, we must press our advantage. Let's strengthen our union organizations to give ourselves the means to act. Let's build solidarity at the grassroots, in workplaces and local unions, to prolong our struggles through general meetings and united work collectives. Let's act with union unity to present a united front against the bosses, and let's raise the debate wherever possible on the unification of the CGT-Solidaires-FSU fighting union movement.

The government and employers are restless; let's take advantage of this to reverse the balance of power!
