(en) Italy, Umanita Nova #24-25 - Case Kirk. The Masters of Hate (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sat, 25 Oct 2025 08:18:26 +0300

Just one day after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a very interesting study on political violence was published in the United States. The body behind this publication -another very noteworthy aspect- is the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank founded in 1977 by Ed Crane, Murray Rothbard, and Charles Koch, all leading figures of the anarcho-capitalist movement, which, as is well known, is based on the glorification of the free market, an unrestrained capitalism, the reduction of the state to a mere anti-proletarian repressive instrument, together with the recognition of individual freedoms (especially of an entrepreneurial nature). Traditionally linked to the historic Republican Party, this Cato Institute is certainly not suspected of harboring leftist sympathies.

Well then, here's what the data tell us. First of all, they concern acts of political violence committed in the USA over the last 50 years and report a number of murders (excluding the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks) amounting to 620.

Of these 620, 391 are attributable to the extreme right, 143 to Islamist militants, and 63 to the far left. This tragic accounting alone is enough to understand what lies behind the fantastic lies of Trump and his followers and imitators, in the USA and abroad (first and foremost in Italy). When two-thirds of the victims are the work of supremacists, racists, fascist-leaning Islamists, and religious fanatics, the entire rhetoric against left-wing violence shows its inconsistency and instrumental nature. Blowing the murder of Kirk out of all proportion and using it to cry out about an allegedly imminent danger of left-wing subversion means, for Trump and company, preparing the ground for exceptional measures - far heavier than those already in place to criminalize immigration, accompanied by the militarization of U.S. states and cities governed by Democrats.

It is typical of authoritarian regimes (or those in the process of becoming authoritarian) to create an enemy -whether external or internal- to justify increasing police powers. The seizure of power (in the USA by the MAGA party, in Italy by FdI and its allies) must become permanent (DC-style from 1945 onward), and to do so it must rely on a constant denunciation of a supposed, propagandized subversive threat coming from the opposition. Let's remember Berlusconi and his endless attacks on the "communists" with "blood-soaked hands," referring to Occhetto, D'Alema, and Veltroni.

In Italy, in these very days, Meloni & company have not held back from exploiting Kirk's murder and essentially repeating Elon Musk's mantra, who, in a post just before the attack, had stated that "the left is the party of murder." Without fear of ridicule, Luca Ciriani, a minister in the current government, even invoked the Red Brigades to accuse those who do not bow to the memory of the illustrious pro-Trump influencer. Odifreddi -who dared to point out that comparing Martin Luther King to Charlie Kirk is absurd and ended with the saying "who sows the wind reaps the storm"- was publicly pilloried by Meloni herself, who from the stage of Franco's heirs linked her "battle" against political hatred with the alleged celebrations of the left over Kirk's murder. Commissioner Luigi Calabresi, Sergio Ramelli, etc., have reemerged on the stage of the government's show to counter the resistance narrative with that of a right victimized by leftist violence. Supporting this, the newspaper Libero headlined "The killer's signature: Bella Ciao," and Il Giornale wrote "The partisan killer." Eighty years later, the revenge lust of the fascist, reactionary, and conservative right appears in full view. And the more the memory of massacres (Piazza Fontana in Milan, Piazza della Loggia in Brescia, those on trains, the Bologna station) is renewed, the more the heirs of the Italian Social Movement strive to turn the tables.

But of course, that's not all. While Meloni & company denounce a non-existent climate of "Years of Lead," they are in fact thinking about the mounting climate of war sweeping across the continent. With the security decree they have laid the groundwork for criminalizing dissent; by occupying RAI and the main communication channels, they are securing an information monopoly; with their judicial reform they intend to seize control of the prosecution service and thus dictate the political direction of justice.

The huge expenditures for rearmament will require significant cuts in social spending while wages remain stagnant. This will inevitably lead to a progressive impoverishment of the population and carries the real risk of triggering a wave of social protest, fueled by a youth increasingly sensitive to and engaged in struggles against inequality, wars, and ongoing genocides.

For the government, the murder of Kirk is just the latest -in chronological order- media opportunity to prevent the political and trade union left from serving as a glue for the mounting social dissatisfaction. But even in this case, there is a clear inability to grasp the major changes that have taken place in recent times. The reality is that neither the right nor the left are capable of truly representing the people of this country. The (mostly media) war being waged between the two sides is an intense confrontation between bureaucratic apparatuses and vested interests over the control of banks. The real subversion lies elsewhere: in the wreckage of a failed democracy made of blank checks and corruption, in the depths of a counter-power that is maturing despite everything.
