(en) Italy, Umanita Nova #23/25 - Let's stop the war. Let's stop the genocide (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Fri, 10 Oct 2025 09:03:10 +0300

September has only begun a few days ago, and already there are multiple deadlines and calls for demonstrations and initiatives, both nationally and locally. At the center of attention right now is the "Global Sumud Flotilla," which has catalyzed many tensions in society, starting with the horror of the ongoing genocide in Gaza and widespread discontent with the government's rearmament policy. In some cities, demonstrations and food drives have mobilized thousands of people.

Like other similar initiatives seen over the years in other parts of the world, the "Global Sumud Flotilla" presents numerous critical issues and contradictions, some of which are significant. But beyond political considerations regarding the shipment, it is clear that yet another attack on a convoy carrying humanitarian aid for a population decimated by hunger and war would constitute a further act of arrogance by the Israeli government, which has meanwhile issued the evacuation order for Gaza City and intensified its bombing.

The Autonomous Port Workers' Collective of Genoa, the Autonomous Port Workers' Group of Livorno, the USB, the CUB, and other grassroots unions, as well as, on various levels, some confederal groups, have launched calls for a port blockade, strike action, and mobilization if the humanitarian shipment is prevented from reaching Gaza. Antimilitarism often finds little room in the appeals circulating. This is not surprising because in recent years, despite some small but important steps forward, we have seen how much work still remains to be done for radical opposition to armies and militarism to become a principle and practice shared by grassroots organizations, collectives, and movements.

We believe this is the time to go all the way, to take the initiative, to spread antimilitarism wherever possible, starting, where the conditions are right, with the mobilizations, strikes, and blockades that will take place. The ever-increasing participation in demonstrations opens the possibility of change, of transforming ideas and even the objectives of the protests. The mobilization is already implementing practices that create spaces of freedom from the restrictions recently imposed by the Security Decree. At this time, it is crucial to bring antimilitarism to the forefront, because by supporting strikes and blockades, initiatives will spread everywhere that, by demonstrating the strength of opposition to the war, can effectively halt the government's warmongering policies.
