(en) France, UCL: Ecology - Heatwaves and Profits: Same Culprits, Same Battles! (fr, ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

In August 2025, the second heatwave of the year hits three-quarters of France, with extreme heat in many communities. It follows the June heatwave, with temperatures 10°C above seasonal norms. ---- Contrary to what some climate skeptics or confusionists claim, there is a scientific consensus: we are experiencing accelerating global warming, and we are still only feeling its initial effects! Between 1950 and 1970, Météo-France recorded a heatwave every four years. During the last decade, it recorded two per year (eight times more).

However, global warming does not impact us all equally, and those most affected are also those who contribute the least to it. Countries in the Global South are bearing the brunt of its consequences. In Asia, nearly half a million people die each year from heat-related causes, according to The Lancet. In 2024, 242 million students worldwide will have missed school due to extreme weather conditions (UNICEF).

In every country, the most vulnerable suffer more from heatwaves in their daily lives than the middle-class. Working conditions are rarely improved and are becoming unbearable, increasing health risks. Yet, the law still does not provide for a maximum safe temperature for workers.

Our leaders constantly call on us to take individual action, but the culprits are states and large capitalist corporations, which hold the power and wealth. The culprits-who refuse to make decisions and implement them-continue to enrich themselves: they use state and European institutions, the media, and lobbying to perpetuate the capitalist system that threatens the living conditions of billions of people and destroys the environment.

Yet it is possible to push them back through organization: the fight against the A69, the abandonment of the Notre-Dame-des-Landes airport project, the fight against mega-wastewatersheds, counter-summits, and many others are all ways to change the world through struggle. The various union, political, community, and civic organizations have proven that we can transform our fear and powerlessness into anger and engage in a power struggle to defeat the capitalist system!

Let's organize to build a more egalitarian society, respectful of everyone and our environment!

Libertarian Communist Union, August 20, 2025.
